On the morning of Nov. 9, there were many women in tears across the country after Donald Trump triumphed over Hillary Clinton in the race to be president. But while Chelsea Handler and other women were bereft about Hillary’s loss to an admitted “pussy grabber,” even more women in America were celebrating that their candidate – The Don- had won.
This was supposed to be the year that women would finally shatter the ultimate glass ceiling by electing the most qualified candidate ever, for president.
That, of course, didn’t happen. And, most surprising in this shocking situation was that 53 percent of college-educated women voted for Donald Trump. These were the women who many thought would be most offended by Donald Trump’s insults to women and his sexism. Aside from his “pussy grabbing” comments caught on tape, there was the fact that he called women “dogs,” “slobs,” “bimbos” and “pigs.”
That’s why it’s not surprising that Chelsea told Trevor Noah on her December 1 visit that she “woke up with the worst feeling I’ve ever had. It was worse than any breakup I’ve ever had, the worst despair.” She admitted that she cried all morning after Trump’s election, as did many Hillary-supporting women that HollywoodLife.com spoke to.

But, they and Chelsea weren’t enough to beat the blustering billionaire. And Chelsea wasn’t afraid to lay the blame on her sex . A lot of women just didn’t “like” Hillary. “I understand if you don’t ‘like’ Hillary. I get that,” she told Trevor. “And in fact, I’ve heard that same sentiment a million times during the past year. So many women told me that they ‘just didn’t like her,’ without being able to offer any substantive reason.
“Forget about whether you like her (Hillary) or not — look at what she’s done for women and children,” Chelsea explained to Trevor. “Then, you need to get behind that f***king woman whether you like her or not. You get behind someone who’s done the job versus some guy who’s not a real person. He takes advantage of everyone around him.”
Chelsea chalked up some of this lack of female Hillary support to “women listening too much to their husbands,” saying “we have to get rid of them.” However, she reserved most of the responsibility for women not supporting a woman to America’s women, themselves. “I’m not talking about women supporting women just because they are a woman, but when the woman in play is the most qualified in years and has dedicated their life to women and children — there’s something wrong with you, if you don’t think it’s time to shatter this, so in 20 years you can get in the f**king woman you like.”
She has a very serious point. When women won’t vote for the vastly more qualified candidate who has already proven that she has helped women and families, simply because they don’t ‘like’ her, there’s something very weird going on.
I think Chelsea has hit on a not unknown phenomenon — women are often uncomfortable helping or supporting other women.
We don’t have the tradition of a ‘girls club,’ in which women lend a hand to other women to help them get career opportunities and promotions. Too often we look at other women as competitors instead of compatriots. We judge other women on their looks, what they wear, their relationships and their ‘aggressiveness’ at work. We often don’t trust a super high-achieving woman like Hillary.
Donald Trump was applauded when he boasted about his ‘tremendous’ business success. But Hillary had to walk the most careful of lines when letting voters know about her lifetime of achievements and service, without sounding like she was bragging. Even though Hillary didn’t boast, even though she had devoted her career to helping women, children and the American people, even though she supported women’s reproductive rights, equal pay for women and family leave time for child birth and adoption — none of which Donald Trump supported — she still lost the women’s vote. Chelsea made the very valid point that any women still have an issue with supporting other women.
