The Fundamental of Caring follows a retired writer named Ben, who’s played by Paul Rudd, 47. In the wake of a personal tragedy, he becomes a caregiver to Trevor (Craig Roberts), an 18-year-old who suffers from muscle-dystrophy. While under Ben’s care, the two decide to go on an impromptu road trip to all the places that Trevor is obsessed with.
As the trailer progresses, you see the dynamic duo as they begin their adventure, riding around from state to state. And that’s where Selena comes in. The 23-year-old performer plays Dot, a sassy runaway the two pick up when they stop in a local town.
Amid their roadside attraction destinations, Trevor asks the group to make a stop to visit his father, who left him when he was a little boy. As the trio continue on their adventure, they end up learning a lot about friendship, hope, and themselves. The trailer even shows promise of a relationship between Dot and Trevor. In addition to some really emotional scenes, there seems to be some funny moments thrown in as well.
Selena has been in a dozen of movies, including her most recent role in Neighbors 2 with Chloe Grace Moretz, 19, but this seems to be her most dynamic role yet. The Fundamentals of Caring made a splash at the Sundance Festival earlier this year, before it was bought by Netflix for a million-dollar deal. The movie is an adaptation of Jonathan Evision’s 2012 novel.
We are definitely excited to see Selena shine like never before in this new film. But sorry Selenators, you’ll have to wait until June 24 for the film’s release.
