We have SO many questions for Beyonce! Even without knowing all the shocking lyrics on her new album Lemonade, alleging that Jay Z had an affair, the album title itself is just as cryptic. Soooo…what exactly is the meaning behind Lemonade? Find out here!
The whole album surrounds the saying “If life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” and is all about overcoming hard times (i.e. the alleged cheating). During a spoken-word segment on the record, Bey divulges further into the meaning by telling a story about her grandmother.
“Take one pint of water, add a half pound of sugar, the juice of eight lemons, the zest of half lemon,” she says. “Pour the water into one, then to another several times. Strain through a clean napkin. Grandmother. The alchemist. You spun gold out of his hard life. Conjured beauty from the things I left behind. Found healing where it did not live. Discovered the antidote in your own kitchen. Broke the curse with your own two hands. You passed these instructions down to your own daughter, who then passed them down to her daughter.”
The 34-year-old is making it clear that she gained her strength to overcome adversity from what her mom and grandmother passed down to her. In addition to this, Jay’s grandmother, Hattie, is featured in the Lemonade movie, giving a speech at her 90th birthday in which she says, “I was given lemons and I made lemonade.”
Although Lemonade concludes with a happy ending for Jay and Bey, fans cannot get past the many telling lyrics about the rapper’s unfaithfulness. It’s been speculated that the “other woman” is designer Rachel Roy, who has been furiously attacked by Bey’s fans on Twitter, and the power couple has yet to comment on the allegations. Oh boy!
