What a beautiful mess. Lila Stangard’s murder was finally solved on the Feb. 26 season finale of How To Get Away With Murder — the identity of the killer blew our minds — but with all the answers we received, came a lot more questions. Like who the heck killed [spoiler]?
Okay — we’ll get straight to it. Frank (Charlie Weber) was identified as Lila’s killer through a series of flashbacks. It was completely shocking and came out of left field. (Or did you guess Frank all along? To be honest, he was never a thought in our minds.) But as the Keating Five spent most of the finale trying to prove Rebecca was the one who killed Lila, someone killed her in the process. Unfortunately, the only people who are aware Rebecca’s now dead are Frank and Annalise (Viola Davis). So which one murdered her? We’ll discuss that in a bit. Let’s rewind a bit and start from the beginning.
We’ll tackle the flashback sequence first. The episode opened with Rebecca talking to Lila in her apartment. Rebecca tried convincing Lila that her boyfriend, Griffin’s, a jerk. Whether he was or not didn’t matter to Lila, though, because all she wanted was for him to sleep with her so she could pretend he was the father of her baby. Rebecca was unaware of this, so instead, she went out of her way to prove Griffin’s a jerk. How? By sleeping with him and inviting Lila over for the show. This sent Lila into a tailspin and she called Sam, who did impregnate her, to tell him that their plan wasn’t working out — she couldn’t get Griffin to sleep with her. Sam and Lila then met on the roof of the sorority house, where they kissed and Sam told her he loved her. Once Sam left, however, he called Frank to ask him to kill Lila. After Lila gets killed, Griffin looked for her on the roof, but didn’t see her. When Rebecca looked, she did find her. When she heard voices, she jumped in the water tank with Lila, which explains why her crazy roommate said she was found wet. So Sam did, in a way, kill Lila, even though he had Frank do the dirty work.
In present time, a lot went down as well. Oliver and Connor (Jack Falahee) were getting hot and heavy, but before they could go all the way, Oliver requested they both get tested for STDs. Considering Connor’s “drug addiction” and promiscuous lifestyle, Oliver decided it was best to take all necessary precautions. Unfortunately, he had no idea that he’d be the one with HIV, not Connor. They obviously have a lot of obstacles ahead of them. Let’s just hope love prevails.
Asher (Matt McGorry) and Bonnie also faced a bit of turbulence this week. After Frank witnessed them making out in the parking deck, he sort of used it as blackmail to keep Asher in check, and away from the group’s investigation on Rebecca. But they did manage to sleep together again, so that’s a plus.
Meanwhile, Laurel (Karla Souza) revealed to Michaela (Aja Naomi King) that she was hiding her engagement ring for weeks. Lauren said she found it in Connor’s car after they disposed of Sam’s body, but she kept it hidden because she knew that as long as the ring was missing, Michaela would keep her mouth shut about the murder.
Now as far as Rebecca is concerned, Wes (Alfred Enoch) convinced Laurel, Michaela, and Connor that she may have been the one who killed Lila. And when Rebecca found this out, and then threatened them by saying she’d call the attention of the campus cop, who witnessed them leave Annalise’s house the night Sam went missing, all hell broke loose. They tied Rebecca up with duct tape and called Annalise for help.
“We’re not monsters! We don’t tie people up and hold them captive against their will!” Annalise exclaimed upon seeing Rebecca gagged and tied up. Instead, they bring her to Annalise’s house, where she asks them all to prove Rebecca killed Lila. But when Asher came knocking on the door, Rebecca used the distraction to her advantage and texted someone, “Egg 911. At Lawyer’s House,” from Michaela’s phone. We still don’t know who she texted, but we assume we’ll find out next season.
In order to avoid Asher, the group then took Rebecca into the basement and tied her up. It was there that she told Wes she didn’t kill Lila. She explained how she found Lila and jumped into the water tank with her to hide. Wes came upstairs and told everyone, but when Annalise went to check on Rebecca, she was gone. And in the final scene, we saw Annalise go back down into the basement, where she had a quick conversation with Frank. Basically, they both said they thought the other one “did it” before the camera panned down to a very dead Rebecca under the basement stairs.
Who killed her? It could be Wes, who was the last one seen with Rebecca. He said he “didn’t let her go.” Does that mean he murdered her? We’re still not sure. But obviously, we’ll find out how Annalise and the Keating Five will get away with murder again next season, when the show returns in the fall!
