‘Teen Wolf’ Recap: Derek’s Tragic Past Is Revealed

There's a reason Derek's big, bushy eyebrows always look so sullen -- and this week, we found out what that is! Teen Wolf delivered its much-hyped flashback episode July 22, and while the multiple strolls down memory lane held my interest for the hour, I'm definitely suffering from information overload. While Gerard relayed the twisted history of the evil Alpha pack, Peter's (Ian Bohen) tale specifically focused on what turned Derek's (Tyler Hoechlin) eyes into sparkling baby blues.

Also, I apologize if this recap comes across more recap-y than most. There’s just a lot of ground to cover.

Meet The Emissaries

Let’s start with the new vocab word we got this week: “emissary,” which is basically an Alpha’s liaison to the rest of humanity. Dr. Deaton was apparently the emissary of Talia Hale, Derek’s mother, who was once highly respected as the most powerful member of the current evil Alpha pack — and rightfully so, as she could freakin’ shape shift!

Ms. Morell (Bianca Lawson) is also an emissary, unfortunately, to the evil Alphas.

But does this also mean that Morrell and Deaton are connected to the infamous druids we’ve been hearing so much about? That certainly would explain why Bianca sounds so sinister in the mid-season finale trailer MTV premiered at Comic-Con this past weekend.

As an aside, Gerard shared all of this new with Scott (Tyler Posey), in exchange for use of the True Alpha’s healing abilities — but Scotty still doesn’t trust him. And, really, why should he?

Derek’s Bad Romance

OK, let’s talk about Derek’s eyes now!

Back in high school, Derek fell for a pretty young thing named Paige, and things seemed to be looking up for the couple — until Peter basically forced Derek to turn his little girlfriend into a big, bad wolf. But when Derek was unable to bite her himself, Ennis (Brian Patrick Wade) stepped in to finish the task.

Sadly, as Peter explained, some people just aren’t meant for the life of a werewolf; so poor Romeo-wolf had to sit there as his Juliet died in his arms. Actually, worse: He had to put her out of her misery himself! Cue the blue eyes.

Odds & Ends

1. There’s a slight chance Deucalion (Gideon Emery) is the son of the Greek Titan Prometheus. Or, at least, he’s named after him. Either way, he’s old as s**t.

2. Gerard is the one who blinded Deucalion.

3. Oh, and Deucalion isn’t always blind. When he wolfs out, he can see, which Allison (Crystal Reed) thinks she might be able to use against him — though she should really just go home because her plans are always awful.

4. Did anyone detect a spark between Stiles (Dylan O’Brien) and Cora (Adelaide Kane)?

HollywoodLifers, what did you think of this week’s episode? Was it too much information all at once, or did you enjoy the (many) reveals? And what do you predict will happen next? Drop a comment!
