‘Smash’ Series Finale Recap: Babies, Handcuffs & Twists At The Tonys

Stop reading now if you haven't seen the final episode of 'Smash.' Spoilers ahead! NBC lowered the curtains on Smash for the final time May 26, with a two-hour series finale that -- in my mind -- neatly wrapped up two seasons' worth of on- and off-stage drama. And as the words of the final song echoed, the show gave us a big finish, but kept us wanting more.

Now let’s talk about how the gang fared during the finale. While everyone received a pretty solid ending, some definitely ended more happily than others.

Ivy & Derek Are Multiplying

Amidst the joy of her billion Tony Award nominations, Ivy (Megan Hilty) spent the final two hours debating whether or not to abort Derek’s spawn. She also won the Tony for Best Leading Actress in a Musical, which you have to admit, she totally deserved. Karen (Katharine McPhee) kicked ass in Hit List, but it’s been Ivy’s destiny to accept that award since the pilot, when she belted out her first note in “Let Me Be Your Star.”

Meanwhile, Derek (Jack Davenport) finally renounced his womanizing ways. Not only did he come clean about hiring Daisy in exchange for sexy times, but the smarmy Brit also yanked her from the Tony number!

As for that baby I mentioned earlier, it looks like Ivy’s keeping it and raising it with Derek. We didn’t actually see her break the news to him, but if this picture is any indication, I’d say they’ll be all right:

Jimmy Collins: From Songbird To Jailbird

Besides taking a shower and putting on a tux, which were major character developments in and of themselves, Jimmy (Jeremy Jordan) finally decided to start being a human — and by “human,” I mean “prisoner.” He took his whole messy back story to the cops, and now he’s look at 6 to 18 months behind bars.

For those of you keeping score at home, this means Karen ended the series with no awards of her own and no boyfriend to complain to! I’m kind of shocked, actually; I thought Little Miss Iowa’s dumb luck would never run out, but apparently this show had a few surprises left in it.

Julia’s Never-Ending Divorce

Given Julia’s merry-go-round of boyfriends this season, it’s been pretty easy to forget the Bombshell scribe was ever married — but in the second half of the finale, it was impossible for Julia (Debra Messing) to avoid her fuming ex. Frank returned with a vengeance, demanding that Julia go on-record about her affair with Michael Swift.

I never liked Michael — I’ve always thought he besmirched our last name — but Julia sure did; and she still does, as we saw the ex-cheaters reunite during the final moments of the finale!

Tom Gets Lucky

Tom (Christian Borle) didn’t win Best Director, but it’s all good, because his real prize came in the form of “straight” actor Patrick Dillon. The duo spent the final two hours wrapped up in their own little rom-com, before eventually locking lips on the steps of the Tonys.

(Get it, Tom! Remind this boyfriend to look both ways before he crosses the street, will ya?)

Come On, Eileen

Much like Julia’s forgotten marriage, I had all-but-purged Eileen’s (Anjelica Huston) bartender boyfriend Nick from my memory. But because this was a series finale, all loose ends needed to be tied — and Nick always knew how to loosen that old gal up.
