‘Vampire Diaries’ Recap: Bonnie Drops The Veil & A Sacrifice Is Made

Deaths! Twists! Special ghost stars! It was a hell of a week in the neighborhood -- literally. It was the end of the world as we know it on the May 9 episode of The Vampire Diaries, and I felt fine. Actually, I felt great, thanks largely to the parade of familiar — and dearly departed — faces that paraded across my TV screen this week. Of course, not every visitor was a sight for sore eyes. And not every character survived the hour.

Is Bonnie Dead?

I won’t beat around the bush with this one: Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham) is finally dead. I don’t mean “finally” like I was waiting for her to die — even though I kind of was — but that girl has been chilling on the brink of death since day one. Like, even more than the rest of the characters. She was able to turn Silas to stone using her expression powers, but as usual, she got totally overzealous and couldn’t leave well enough alone.

Against Grams’ wishes — yes, Jasmine Guy was among the ‘surprise’ ghost stars — Bonnie tried to express Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) back to life for good, but it proved to be too much for her. So she died. (Side note: How much did Bonnie look like Dark Willow with those creepy dark veins moving through her body? I try not to make Buffy comparisons with this show, but hot damn.)

Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?

Speaking of Jeremy, I was super relieved to see Li’l Gilbert back in action; but obviously not as relieved as Elena (Nina Dobrev), who was a neck-snap away from death. Elena’s arrow-wielding little bro took care of Kol (Nathaniel Buzolic) — one of the episode’s less-welcome visitors — then took care of his sister, emotionally speaking.

Alaric (Matt Davis) was my second-favorite returner, as he came to give Damon (Ian Somerhalder) three things he desperately needed: a drinking buddy, a go-get-Elena pep talk, and of course, the cure! (Apparently, Cult getting canceled was the best thing to happen to all of us.)

And last but not least, there was Lexi. I feel like she never left, mostly because Arielle Kebbel seems to live on The CW, but it was nice to see her nonetheless. Stefan (Paul Wesley) was also happy to see her, and it was nice to see him genuinely smiling again. For the first time in a while, he actually looked like he didn’t have a care in the world. Being single suits him.

Mattbekah Gets Kol-Blocked

This week’s episode was also bursting with adorable moments between Matt (Zach Roerig) and Rebekah (Claire Holt) — which makes me even more depressed to think that Becky will soon be leaving him for the Big Easy. Even when Kol showed up, hungry for a fight, the situation managed to turn around in Mattbekah’s favor.

Things really seemed to be looking up for the fan-favorite couple — until the episode’s final moments, when Becky’s ex-boyfriend Alexander returned. Along with a few other baddies I certainly haven’t been missing.

HollywoodLifers, do you think Bonnie will stay dead forever? Who do you think will end up getting the cure? And who will Elena choose — again — next week? Drop a comment with your season finale theories and predictions below!
