'Awkward' Recap: Matty Tells Jenna He Loves Her

Plus, Jenna finally confronts her mom about the carefrontation letter -- and it doesn't go well. The July 5 episode of Awkward taught viewers yet another timeless lesson: If you're going to have sex, or do anything sex-like, make sure you're not being filmed! When footage of Jenna (Ashley Rickards) and Matty (Beau Mirchoff) hooking up at "the sanctuary" went public — along with the sexcapades of nearly every other ne'er-do-well at school — she decided to tell Jake (Brett Davern) about her real first time.

And as if the situation wasn’t complicated enough, Matty decided to stop being a total d-bag and tell Jenna that he loves her! That’s right, he finally dropped the L-bomb. Fortunately for Jenna — and all members of Team Jake, myself included — the blond boy wonder told her he didn’t want to know who she lost her virginity to, so all remains right in the world.

As for the security tape, it turns out the leak was all part of the Asian students’ scheme to oust the vice principal, a position quickly scooped up by everyone’s favorite nut-case guidance counselor Val (Desi Lydic)! Personally, I hope we see more of the Asians. I like the idea of there being a secret society manipulating our favorites from the shadows. Plus, Ming (Jessica Lu) needs more funny material!

Back at the homestead, Jenna’s mom thought she could cook her way back into her daughter’s good graces. But once a teary eyed Jenna told Lacey (Nikki Deloach) that the carefrontation letter was her secret to keep, she did the unthinkable: She told Jenna’s dad (Mike Faiola)! If the trailer for the second season didn’t reveal Jenna’s parents’ split, I’d think Lacey’s confession wouldn’t rock the boat too much.

But, of course, it does.

OK, let’s talk: Did Matty’s “I love you” earn him any points in your book? Did you love the Asians as much as I did? And seriously, who is commenting on Jenna’s blog?! Drop a comment with your best thoughts and theories!
