'Glee' Recap: Mercedes Is Selfish For Not Sharing The Lead Role!

Mercedes threw away a chance to show how great she would be as Maria in 'West Side Story,' all because of her pride! After Mercedes (Amber Riley) and Rachel (Lea Michele) had a 'Maria-Off' on Glee, Coach Beiste (Dot Jones), Artie (Kevin McHale) and Emma (Jayma Mays) gave the coveted role of to BOTH of them. But Mercedes complained about having to share and quit! How stupid!

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Mercedes has shown us time and time again that she doesn’t want to practice, she just wants to be handed the spotlight and yet when despite herself, she’s given a chance to shine, she refuses to take it!

Why, Mercedes? You would have been an amazing Maria!

What’s more ridiculous is that the directors had decided to add an extra week to the musical’s run because they couldn’t decide between the two divas. If they had only picked one, there would be no need for the extra performances, meaning that Mercedes would have only played Maria for a week anyway, if they had just chosen her over Rachel! There would have been no difference to her!

And more than that, her stubbornness led to her ousting from New Directions. And instead of doing the right thing and apologizing to Mr. Schue (Matthew Morrison), she went straight to Shelby Corcoran (Idina Menzel) to join her singing group.

Meanwhile, Rachel dealt with winning the part “by default.” (Yes, she’s annoying and no one likes her, but I doubt anyone would think — except for Mercedes — that she wasn’t a worthy choice.) Furthermore, she decided to run against Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Brittany (Heather Morris) for class president, putting Finn (Cory Monteith) in a tough spot and causing a rift between herself and Kurt.

In other West Side Story news, Blaine (Darren Criss) was cast as Tony, to his boyfriend’s delight, Santana (Naya Rivera) as Anita, and Mike (Harry Shum Jr.) as Riff.

And speaking of Mike, his storyline gave the episode its name — Asian F. He got an A-minus (the eponymous Asian F) on a Chemistry test, prompting his father to suspect he was on drugs or over-extended. Mr. Chang wanted Mike to quit the glee club. But, obviously what his son really wants to do is dance!

This lead to a sweet scene with Mike’s mother, who told her son that he was braver than she ever was for following his dreams. And she told him that when he was cast in West Side Story, they’d tell his father together. I wish they’d show that conversation!

As for Mr. Schue and Emma — he thought was ashamed of him and didn’t want to introduce him to her parents. It turns out that her parents are “ginger supremacists” (is this a real thing?) and she was actually ashamed of them. And there was a revelation about her OCD, but really this is boring.

Of course, I could never forget Brittany. She did an incredible version of Beyonce‘s “Run The World (Girls).” I hope the writers are planning a few presidential debates, because I can’t wait to hear what she has to say.

What do you think of the episode, HollywoodLifers? Was Mercedes better than Rachel? Or was she foolish to give up Maria like that?
