Vladimir Putin — Vladimir Putin has been the president of Russia for a decade, since being elected in 2012. While he’s only been president for ten years, he has been a long-standing leader in Russia for well-over 20-years. Prior to his election, Putin served as the country’s prime minister from 1999 to 2000 and then again from 2008 to 2012. Prior to his own political ambitions, he was a member of the KGB and served under President Boris Yeltsin.

Despite his long tenure, Putin has been one of the most controversial leaders on the international stage. He and Russia have faced backlash for their treatment of the LGBTQ community, especially following the passing of the “Russian gay propaganda law.” He’s also faced scrutiny for his relationship with former U.S. President Donald Trump. Most recently, Putin faced immense backlash, following Russia’s attack on Ukraine, amid growing tensions in the reason.
