OMG, what an insane music video! In Shawn Mendes’ new vid for his latest single, ‘Mercy,’ the singer finds himself trying to escape a car that’s filling up with water at a rapid pace. Does he make it? Watch the intense video here and find out!

As the video starts out, Shawn makes his way into a room full of instruments seemingly set up for him to play “Mercy.” But suddenly the vid flashes to another scene where the 18-year-old singer is completely underwater, struggling to get out of a car that’s sinking. The entire video cuts back and forth between Shawn playing the song and trying to escape from drowning, making for one thrilling video that the Mendes Army is surely watching anxiously!

Because there is no preceding storyline before we see Shawn in the underwater car, it’s unclear how Shawn ended up in such a scary situation. Taking a closer listen to the lyrics, though, Shawn is singing about a girl that he wants to “please have mercy” on him and his heart — so since he gets out of the sinking car alive (spoiler, sorry), it could be symbolic of him fighting his way through a rather intense relationship. That’s quite the metaphor, huh?

Considering Shawn’s last music video for his song “Treat You Better” involved an abusive relationship, he has made it awfully clear that he’s not afraid to make pretty extreme music videos! Plus, for only being 18, Shawn really knows how to write some deep lyrics to go along with his crazy vids. And with a new album just around the corner (Illuminate drops Sept. 23), we’ll get to hear more of his musical chops soon enough!

If you can’t get enough of Shawn from this video — he looks totally hot even despite nearly drowning, so we can’t blame you — you can even see him on tour in the near future, too! Shawn just announced his Illuminate World Tour, on which he’ll be stopping in just about every city and country imaginable. He may be asking for “Mercy” from a girl, but we certainly don’t need any “Mercy” from Shawn!
