Beyonce Promotes Positive Body Image In ‘Pretty Hurts’ Video — Watch

Thu, April 24, 2014 5:10pm EDT by 20 Comments

What an emotional video! To celebrate being placed on ‘Time’ magazine’s cover, Beyonce released her ‘Pretty Hurts’ music video, which showcases the dramatic life of a beauty queen facing the critics and struggling with her body image.

Beyonce is making a statement with her new video for “Pretty Hurts,” which was only available on her visual album before now. In the video, we see the body image issues that women go through, and even shows a girl trying diet pills and eating cotton balls to get skinny!

Beyonce’s ‘Pretty Hurts’ Video

Beyonce premiered the video with Time.com, to coincide with her new cover, also launching the website, WhatIsPretty.com.

“How do you define pretty? Upload a photo or video to Instagram tagged #WhatisPretty that captures what the word means to you,” the site reads.

The video is definitely a must-watch — and it features a cameo from Harvey Keitel, as the beauty pageant host. He asks Bey AKA “Miss 3rd Ward” what her aspiration in life is. After thinking about it for a while, she says, “to be happy.”

We all know that’s what it should be, rather than to have “blonder hair,” as she puts it. One line sums it up pretty well in the song — she sings, “It’s my soul that needs surgery/Plastic smiles and denial can only take you so far.”

Watch the video and read the lyrics below — then let us know, is this your favorite song by Beyonce?

‘Pretty Hurts’ Lyrics

Mama said, “You’re a pretty girl.
What’s in your head, it doesn’t matter
Brush your hair, fix your teeth.
What you wear is all that matters.”

Pre-Hook:
Just another stage, pageant the pain away
This time I’m gonna take the crown
Without falling down, down, down

Hook:
Pretty hurts, we shine the light on whatever’s worst
Perfection is a disease of a nation, pretty hurts, pretty hurts
Pretty hurts, we shine the light on whatever’s worst
We try to fix something but you can’t fix what you can’t see
It’s the soul that needs the surgery

Verse 2:
Blonder hair, flat chest
TV says, “Bigger is better.”
South beach, sugar free
Vogue says, “Thinner is better.”

Pre-Hook:
Just another stage, pageant the pain away
This time I’m gonna take the crown
Without falling down, down, down

Hook:
Pretty hurts, we shine the light on whatever’s worst
Perfection is a disease of a nation, pretty hurts, pretty hurts (pretty hurts)
Pretty hurts (pretty hurts), we shine the light on whatever’s worst
We try to fix something but you can’t fix what you can’t see
It’s the soul that needs the surgery

Bridge:
Ain’t got no doctor or pill that can take the pain away
The pain’s inside and nobody frees you from your body
It’s the soul, it’s the soul that needs surgery
It’s my soul that needs surgery
Plastic smiles and denial can only take you so far
Then you break when the fake facade leaves you in the dark
You left with shattered mirrors and the shards of a beautiful past

Hook:
Pretty hurts, we shine the light on whatever’s worst (pretty hurts)
Perfection is a disease of a nation, pretty hurts, pretty hurts
Pretty hurts, we shine the light on whatever’s worst
We try to fix something but you can’t fix what you can’t see
It’s the soul that needs the surgery

Outro:
When you’re alone all by yourself (pretty hurts, pretty hurts)
And you’re lying in your bed (pretty hurts, pretty hurts)
Reflection stares right into you (pretty hurts, pretty hurts)
Are you happy with yourself? (pretty hurts, pretty hurts)
You stripped away the masquerade (pretty hurts, pretty hurts)
The illusion has been shed (pretty hurts, pretty hurts)
Are you happy with yourself? (pretty hurts, pretty hurts)
Are you happy with yourself? (pretty hurts, pretty hurts)

Such a hypocrite She sings this while flashing her half naked body, it doesn’t make sense when she is singing it, because she has bought into the system herself, the image she is singing about she herself has bought into it!

Beyonce, are you ever going to act your age? Your not a spring chicken anymore and that dance you do with jay is for the privacy of your own bedroom, that should never be public I can’t believe you grope an grind each other like you do inpublic. Nothing is sacred anymore and your performance on TV SUCKED, save it for your bedroom.

Then you don’t understand the song. To call someone jealous says you totally misunderstood the song!

I love this song so much. It speaks to young girls who are struggling with self-esteem issues. Cutting, eating disorders, they probably feel like their not pretty enough. Beyonce and so many other influential women in this world are so wonderful to come out with music, videos, books, articles and blogs to help young girls (everyone really) and to show them just how special they are. Great job Beyonce! You are not the first, but you will definitely not be the last to inspire young women everywhere.

And yet she has conformed to what she is singing about. Notice the thin frame she has now, if being pretty wasn’t so important to her why has she morphed into a thin, blonde white girl? Not meaning to offend anyone, I am being truthful.

Yes you are, but heaven forbid anyone call her out on her hypocrisy. She believes the hype written about her, but I think internally still struggles with low self esteem. I say that because people comfortable in their own skin (sex, race and body image) do not feel the need to constantly put themselves on display to prove something. If she actually thinks we are “moved” by her portrayal of a female struggling with beauty expectations; when she herself has set those standards and/or has sold out to them. No props here. More like sick of the innocent doe-like expression she attempts to do in all her videos…which about sums up her acting ability.
