‘Teen Wolf’ Stars Tease Season 3B Death & Reject All Hope For ‘Sterek’

Tue, February 18, 2014 2:21pm EDT by 55 Comments

Watch Tyler Posey get candid about the show’s most passionate ship.

Teen Wolf has been pretty hectic in recent weeks, what with the parade of Oni spirits marching through Beacon Hills, the big werewolf baby-daddy revelation, and the constant looming threat of imminent death. So when HollywoodLife.com caught up with the stars of MTV’s hit series in NYC, we naturally pressed on the most important issue plaguing season 3B: ‘Sterek!’

The will-they-won’t-they relationship of Derek (Tyler Hoechlin) and Stiles (Dylan O’Brien) has long been a hot-button issue on the minds of Tumblr users worldwide, and for the first time, Tyler Posey told us exactly how he feels about the fan-driven ship:

I think ‘Sterek’ is a bizarre, weird, twisted thing. And I think that anyone who pays more attention to Sterek than the show isn’t watching the show for the right reasons.

Well, there you have it, folks.

‘Teen Wolf’ Stars Preview Series’ Biggest Death Yet

Of course, ‘Sterek’ will soon be the least of fans’ concerns, as a major character is poised to be killed off later this season! The stars remained pretty tight-lipped about who’s going to bite the dust, but they did confirm that it’ll be the series’ most crucial death so far.

“It’s going to affect everyone,” Hoechlin told us, to which Posey added, “It’s going to affect the show as a whole.”

HollywoodLifers, watch our video interview for more Season 3B scoop, including where Scott’s relationships with Allison (Crystal Reed) and Kira (Arden Cho) are headed. Then drop a comment: Do you agree with Tyler about ‘Sterek’? And what do you hope to see as we wind down the show’s third season?

After seeing the comments of Sterek fans, I personally favor the Posey’s opinion…
really immature, childish, disgusting behavior from Sterek’s fans.. seriously …so disappointed at them ..its like they don’t even watch the show for a real story.

Im actually a little shocked that you felt that way about most of the comments. I thought that both sides of the argument have had their share of ignorance and of well-placed and logical arguments. In my own opinion, i think that most of the anti-sterek comments have been immature and disgusting. I just dont understand why we should be attacked for our interpretation of the show. And while i havent noticed anyone specifically demeaning the ship because it i homosexual, its hard not to feel as if homophobia is at the root of these comments, especially when posey exalts the pairing of scott and kira. To me, sterek makes more sense than scott falling in love with girls he just met (scallison was just silly [although i did still ship it])

So, Tyler’s REAL last name is PHOBE-sey !

Notice that he didn’t say that it doesn’t fit the characters as written and thus far portrayed, but was more generic.

Well, now it’s out it’s dark little closet. Tyler Posey thinks that on TW all the hetero booty calls and ship fantasies (and mayhem and murder) in the world are just fine, but gay ones aren’t.

He goes on to suggest that there are “right reasons” to be cattle handed over to advertisers so he can get paid, and not right reasons.

Insert foot, chew vigorously until raw.

I personally stopped watching the show when I knew the two weren’t going to get together. I thought it was a great idea. The human boy who is kind of a nuisance becomes something to a brooding werewolf who holds the packs fate. When new love interests started happening for Derek out of the blue, it didn’t even seem like they were even thinking. They had built up so much angst and clues to stiles and Derek getting together then they just popped in another character (didn’t matter if it was a girl or guy) and tried to make it work. So yea. I don’t watch this show anymore because I didn’t like the way the writers went with the story.

I ship “Sterek”, but I still tune in every Monday night regardless if it’d be Canon or not. Posey has a right to his own opinion. Did the words he use hurt? Yes, because I feel like he is calling everyone who ships Sterek weird, twisted, and bizarre, but again that is his opinion.

Whether you ship Sterek or Allisaac or whatever, you are still a Teen Wolf fan, and by verbally attacking eachother because of who we want to see together, what we are doing is segregating the fandom. A fandom should all be united for the love of a show, no matter what you want to see.

To me, it doesn’t matter if Sterek becomes Canon or not, because there is always fanfiction. However, I must politely ask that people please refrain from accusing ALL Sterek shippers for watching Teen Wolf just for the hope of it ever happening and not for the show itself.. Yes, some of us do just that, but not all of us.

It’s never going to happen. How is “Sterek” even valid in the whole storyline of the show?!?!? These actors work hard to being their characters and he world of Teen Wolf to life for our enjoyment. Now all of a sudden people want Stiles and Derek to magically turn gay….for WHAT purpose?!? How would it even matter if they were?!?! People, I’m sorry but they aren’t gay! How is it not crystal clear what Tyler Posey was saying?!? He just wishes people watched for the whole show not some fictional relationship that has absolutely no purpose to the show!!! It doesn’t make him a haters of anyone that is Gay. Not at all. Oh and get over yourselves…if the fans of this whole “Sterk” thing stopped watching the show would still keep going. Stiles and Derek are not gay….Tyler poseys comment wasn’t mean….it was obviously aimed at his frustration as to why people would focus so much on one tiny non existent relationship that doesn’t even matter to the story.

lol Sterek fans are so annoying. The Sterek ship is bizarre because its between an almost 30 year old man with a 16 year old boy, not because of homosexual reasons. When people comment on how much they fantasize about them together it makes me gag, and then they try to compare Stydia as bizarre? LOL, yeah, shipping two 16 year old students together is so ‘bizarre’.

I don’t need Tyler Posey to tell me why and how I should enjoy a TV show- that’s personal to every viewer. And the VIEWERS are all that really matter in the end- they keep Posey in a job. Since he’s decided to mandate what are the “right” reasons for watching the show, I’ll just stop watching. I’m sure others will, as well. Also, as a queer person who’s been called bizarre, twisted, and much worse things all my life, it really hurts to see him use those words when talking about a queer ship. It DOESN’T MATTER whether the ship is canon or non-canon, real or imaginary, what matters is that he used those hurtful words that many of us have had thrown at us for years, about a queer couple that many people love, even if it’s only in their own fan works. Posey and the producers certainly seem to have no problem reaping the benefits of this “weird, twisted thing” when they’re looking for millions of likes on Facebook or thousands of “bizarre” shippers turning out to vote for online polls and awards shows. Good job on alienating many in the Teen Wolf fandom.

I’m sorry, I wasn’t aware that you had special access to the inner workings of Tyler Posey’s brain and know exactly what he meant and the context in which he intended it. Congratulations. I’m certainly not the only queer person who felt this way, either. Words have meaning and they have the ability to hurt, especially words like the ones he used that queer people are subjected to all of our lives. Thanks for calling me melodramatic for being sensitive to certain things. He could have stated his dislike much more diplomatically and it wouldn’t have been an issue. He’s allowed to have an opinion and to not like certain things, but the obvious contempt for he has for certain fans came out clearly in what he said. He also mandated that there is are “right” reasons for watching Teen Wolf and since I’m wrong, NO I WON’T be watching next Monday. I won’t support an actor who has such disdain for the viewers- the people who keep him in a job.

They are quick enough to enlist STEREK fans when they want to win something. Even producing a deliberate video of Tyler H and Dylan together canoodling on a boat to win an award! Posey comes across as a bitter, immature young man who has alienated a good portion of fans who keep this show on air and him in work! He needs to get over himself.

Personally, I don’t think Posey is trying to be offensive. He has his own opinion. If we look at seasons 1 and 2, for example, (and them especially), I think we can all agree that there isn’t much there for us to ship. Yes, there are some amazing and funny scenes between Stiles and Derek, but nothing outright glaringly shippy. So I get why some might see Stiles/Derek as “bizarre”. It’s subjective.

Lack of obvious ship material doesn’t mean there isn’t some material.

Someone below also commented about the characters having been written straight. So far season 3B has already rather clearly questioned Stiles’ sexuality. It’s been briefly brought to light even before that. Whether or not Derek is bisexual is up for debate. Honestly, most likely he isn’t. But I can’t hear anyone in the series saying he couldn’t be. So why not?

However, I would also like to point out this:

Since when have we ever been deterred by whatever canon says to be true? Fans see characters, and they see character dynamics. They see the many different ways in which characters could work together. Having two characters with a working dynamic between them? They will be shipped. Stiles/Derek might not be your Disney romance -kind of deal, but there is snark and sarcasm there between them that has worked with many other fandom pairings before. Granted, not everyone likes certain kinds of dynamics, and to each their own.

Fans see potential. Fans see possibilities. We ship those possibilities. Does them being hypothetical make them twisted? No, it does not. Does the fact that something isn’t canon make it twisted? No, it does not. Does the fact that the canon will never acknowledge your ship stop you from shipping it? Again, no, it does not.

So Derek/Stiles never becoming canon does not actually mean the pairing couldn’t possibly, hypothetically exist. It could. Hypothetically. And so? Yeah — we ship it.

I will ship Sterek forever, no matter what Tyler Posey thinks of it.

All of the canon Teen Wolf couples are weird, twisted and bizarre in some way. None of them are healthy. TBH none of the characters are equipped to be in any kind of relationship considering how much they’ve gone through is less than a year (I can’t believe it still hasn’t been a year in Teen Wolf show time yet after 3 seasons).

Posey can have his opinion on it. Everyone has opinions. But fans can watch a show for any reason the feel like and ship whoever they want. It’s not hurting Posey negatively if people are shipping Sterek. He’s got a job and he’s got loyal fans that aren’t going anywhere.

Sterek is weird and bizarre, if you ask me. There isn’t chemistry between the two, and I feel if they were to get together on the show it’d be extremely… bland. Hell, if Derek was to get with anyone the most likely person would be Isaac; they actually have some sort of connection and it’d be more realistic. I think that Derek and Stiles relationship can be summed up in a sort of strained family relationship. They act more like brothers who only rarely get along somewhat.

Hurt and Disappointed

Posted at 8:31 PM on February 18, 2014

Would he call all the young girls who’ve shipped Stydia since season 1 ‘bizarre, weird and twisted’. That relationship was just as non-canon as Sterek. The only thing canon about it was Stiles had a crush and Lydia completely ignored him. Is Posey calling out all those fans who have stuck with that ship? Or stuck with Scallison even though the romantic side of it looks to be over. Or stuck with Dennifer even though writers and actors have finally confirmed the virgin suicides were what helped Jennifer seduce Derek? Or instantly shipped Allisaac despite their only previous interactions being Allison stabbing Isaac with a knife multiple times?

All Posey has done is given ammunition to all the anti-Sterek people who rain down so much hate on the ship already. For saying how shippers are delusional because the characters are straight (completely ignoring the existence of bisexuality), or bringing the spectacular argument that Sterek could never happen because Derek is such a manly man and could never be gay or bisexual.

Thank you Posey. Pick on the largest slash ship that is donating to Wolf Haven in your name. Thanks for adding more negativity into the fandom. Thank you for making Sterek shippers feel like idiots for supporting this show so strongly. Thank you for following the tradition of calling male/male ships ‘bizarre, weird and twisted.’

Posey thinks Sterek is weird but thinks it’s cute and gets excited if we all ship Scott/Kira. Kira who has been a character in the show for a short time and who automatically gets thrown into a romance with Scott that copies Scott/Allison completely.

He’s fine with that and sees it as normal but if it’s Stiles and Derek, who have been with the show from the start and who Dylan, Hoechlin and Jeff Davis has said on multiple occasions have some of the best chemistry on the show.. That’s what Posey thinks is bizarre, weird and twisted.

Most Sterek shippers aren’t watching the show just for Sterek. Even if they were, why can’t they? What reasons are people allowed to watch Teen Wolf that won’t get them called horrible names from its star? The plots that make little sense? The continuity that fandom has given up trying to understand? The women and POCs that killed off at an alarming rate?

What should we focus on that Tyler Posey is okay with?

Funny how when they need us to get them publicity, we’re the “Alphas of the fandom”, but when they think they don’t need us any more, suddenly we’re “bizarre, weird, twisted” and watching the show “wrong”.

They may never give us Sterek, but there’s absolutely no justification for being so offensive to a very large part of their fanbase. I hope Posey’s satisfied with himself. He’s lost a lot of fans today, and hurt a lot of people who respected and looked up to him.

you’re both wrong and so is posey. firstly, i think that what tyler said was a little harsh, but it is his opinion, and really, there are so many wonderful aspects of the show that fans shouldn’t get too caught up about something that only might (should) happen. he shouldn’t “lose fans” over his comment just because he has different priorities, no matter how misguided those priorities are. i think he said it’s weird and wrong and twisted because stiles and derek are very much foils, which is one reason that so many fans love the pairing. posey just doesn’t seem to ship them, and that’s ok, but he could have worded it a little more nicely. secondly, no characters have been “blatantly written as straight”. it’s called bisexuality, and it was heavily hinted in “illuminated” that stiles is bi. just because derek has never been with a man before on screen doesn’t mean that he’s never considered it, or that he’s opposed to the idea. furthermore, sexuality can be, and often is, fluid. perhaps derek has never found a male to be attractive, but maybe stiles will be the first. or maybe they will never be together, but the show will still be phenomenal.

I disagree. I personally had a relationship that built EXACTLY the same way that the ‘sterek’ fans see the Derek/Stiles build. I don’t see the relationship that I had as bizarre or twisted, and I certainly don’t see Sterek that way either. The comment is offensive, because it demeans those who desire to see this relationship experience portrayed on the screen.
