Why Is it Called Black Friday?
The term for America’s biggest shopping day “Black Friday” was coined in the early 1960s in Philadelphia, according to Britannica. Back then, cops had to manage an influx of crowds shopping for early holiday gifts. So, they described the day as “Black Friday.”
However, “Black Friday” has another historical connotation unrelated to shopping discounts. Per Brittanica, wealthy businessmen Jay Gould, Jim Fisk and Abel Corbin tried to increase gold prices on the New York Gold Exchange by purchasing as much of the metal as they could in 1869. On September 24 of that year, President Ulysses S. Grant intervened, and the financiers’ gold plan crumbled, resulting in a stock market crisis commonly known as Black Friday.
