Evie’s got a new look in the sequel! Let’s talk about the evolution of her style.
Sofia Carson: In the second film, without giving away too much, it starts off in Auradon where the first movie left off. So Evie is, as you all know, living her dream. Her dream was always to be in Auradon, to be a princess, and she’s there. She’s so happy. I think because of that her style has transitioned from VK into more princess, so she has a lot more jewels in her wardrobe, a lot of princess influences within her wardrobe as well. When she goes back to the Isle, she edges it up and goes back to an all-leather blue look with studs and such, but she carries a lot more embroidery and more jewels, more jewelry, more accessories, and her hair is also softer. It’s a side part and in more glamorous waves, so it kind of shows that transition to Auradon life
We’re going to meet Uma — the villain — in this movie. What are Evie’s thoughts on her?
Sofia Carson: Growing up, Uma was always like the villain kid that never liked Mal, obviously. And never really liked us. She was always kind of jealous because she wasn’t a part of our group, and obviously her and Mal have always had a long-standing hatred for one another since they were little girls. Uma, being the daughter of a villain, is like the VKs. She grew up believing that she had to be evil, that she was evil, that everyone in Auradon were horrible human beings that left them and abandoned them. She’s a really angry, hurt girl. Ever since Evie has left the Isle, I think she has a different kind of perspective of her life in the Isle. Since they chose to be good, and they learned that they aren’t their parents, I think Evie has a soft spot for the Villain Kids in the Isle. She sees that they’re more than their tough exteriors. That they’re really just hurt and abandoned kids. So although she doesn’t like Uma, and I think they’re all a little bit scared of her and her power, I think Evie sees in her part of herself. The girl who was abandoned and left behind and just wants a second chance.
Are we going to see more of Evie and Mal’s friendship in Descendants 2?
Sofia Carson: It’s a really strong storyline in the second film. It’s probably mine and Dove’s favorite. The four VKs, all they have is each other, especially now in Auradon, but even when they were on the Isle because their parents were never really around. Now in Auradon they have each other. Evie and Mal have become very, very close. Even though they want different things in life and they’re very different people, they’re sisters bonded for life. There’s some really beautiful moments in the film. There’s a really beautiful moment that’s a Mal and Evie moment that’s just so touching and so beautiful. It immediately takes me back to me and my sister. Their relationship is a very strong storyline that kind of moves the plot forward.
Is the music going to be really different in the sequel?
Sofia Carson: The music is incredible. The music was incredible the first time around, but they’ve just stepped up the game. It’s really remarkable. There’s a really broad range of music. Obviously, there’s some incredible musical numbers, and a beautiful, uplifting finale. The opening number we’ve kind of teased a little bit in the last teaser. It’s called “Ways to be Wicked,” which is insane. Then Uma has a really exciting number. I think adding the element of Uma, the tracks have an element of dubstep meets Rihanna. It’s really cool. There’s also beautiful ballads and some more Bruno Mars-inspired numbers. The writing was really excellent this time around.
If Descendants 3 happens, what other Disney descendants would you love to see?
Sofia Carson: This time around, they introduce some really cool villains. The son of Captain Hook, the son of Gaston, the daughter of Ursula. I think in the animations we have the daughter of Dr. Facilier [from The Princess & The Frog] which could be cool because he does dark magic and would be kind of cool to experiment with. I think also of the good people maybe the Genie’s daughter from Aladdin or son could be cool. Maybe Alice in Wonderland’s daughters or Tinkerbell’s daughter!
Descendants 2 will premiere July 21 on Disney Channel, ABC, Disney XD, Freeform and Lifetime.
