Chills. Before kicking off their El Clásico game, Barcelona and Real Madrid stood solemnly behind a sign that said “Fuerza Chapecoense” — Strength to Chapecoense. The two teams led a beautiful moment of silence for the 19 lost members of the fútbol team, who tragically perished in a shocking plane crash on November 28 outside of Medellin, Colombia, where the team was headed to play. There were 71 people total who died, and six survivors. The deceased included journalists covering the game, team support staff, and flight crew members.
It’s clear that the Brazilian soccer players’ deaths have affected players across the globe. Barcelona and Real Madrid’s beautiful tribute to their fallen comrades proves just that. Photos taken by the team members at the beginning of their flight are harrowing. They were so excited to be heading to Colombia, for what was supposed to be their first international game.
The plane crashed into the Andes mountains after it ran out of fuel. Many people are angry with the pilot, after the flight plan revealed he took off on the journey without an adequate amount of fuel to make it there. The estimated time of the journey and the plane’s range were the same — four hours and 22 minutes — leaving no room for error whatsoever. As the plane neared Medellin, another plane crossed in front of them, requiring the pilot to circle. Without enough fuel to leave any room for error, it crashed into the mountains.
