Copying Selena Gomez’s New Bangs? Here’s The Expert-Approved Way To Style Them

One of life’s biggest dilemmas is whether not to get bangs. Giving us major bang envy (and convincing us to head to the salon, ASAP) is Selena Gomez and her new fringe. Ahead, read tips from the experts on how to style (or fake!) really great bangs this summer.

Selena Gomez, 23, had everyone talking when she took to Instagram to show off her new feathery fringe. The singer had us instantly wanting to copy her layered out look, but not before getting the inside scoop from the pros. Click here for every product your bangs will need, and read ahead for advice from the experts on nailing the look.

If you’ve never had bangs and are unsure whether they suit you, Judy McGuinness, a senior stylist at Mizu Salon in NYC says you can test them out before committing.  “A great way to test out bangs is to fake it, either with a clip-in hairpiece or styling your hair (like in a high pony where the ends fall over your forehead) to make it appear like you have a fringe,” she says.

“If you’re getting a clip-in piece, I suggest taking it to your stylist to cut them to suit your face, and they can show you how to put [them] in and style [your bangs],” Judy tells us.

If you commit to the cut, make sure to wash your hair with a shampoo that won’t weigh your bangs down before you even begin styling. As a Pantene spokesmodel, Selena loves Pantene Intense Hydration Shampoo.

When it comes to styling your bangs, be sure to blow dry your bangs out as soon as you get out of the shower since the small section of hair tends to dry fast. To blow dry your bangs out smooth, use a dryer with the nozzle attachment and a small round brush, moving the blow dryer in a downward direction as you pull the brush through your hair.

If you want smooth bangs, prep them with a lightweight styling cream like Living Proof No Frizz Nourishing Styling Cream while your hair is still damp. To add a bit of texture to your bangs, spray a dry shampoo like Dove Detox & Purify Dry Shampoo on your bangs immediately after styling. “I recommend all of my clients carry a bottle of dry shampoo, with them to keep bangs from getting greasy and flat,” Dove celebrity hairstylist Mark Townsend says.
