Jason Pierre-Paul: NFL Player Has Finger Amputated After Fireworks Accident

Oh no! New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul had to get his right index finger amputated after a scary fireworks accident over the Fourth of July weekend. So shocking!

How awful! Celebrating the Fourth of July went horribly wrong for Jason Pierre-Paul. The 26-year-old New York Giants defensive end injured both of his hands in a fireworks accident in South Florida, and he had to have his right index finger amputated. Will Jason be able to play in the 2015-2016 NFL season?

Jason had his right index finger amputated on July 8, ESPN reports. He also suffered fractures to his right thumb. The fractures are expected to take about six weeks to heal while recovery from the amputation will take about half that time. Jason underwent multiple surgeries for his injuries and will be hospitalized for two or three more days.

Despite his injuries, Jason could return to play “sooner than people think,” according to the outlet. He is still expected to play in the 2015-2016 season. Jason isn’t technically under contract with the Giants because he hasn’t signed his one-year franchise tender. The deadline for long-term contracts is July 15. Jason had a great season as a pro in the 2014 season.

Shockingly, Jason wasn’t the only NFL player to suffer hand injuries over the Fourth of July weekend. Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback C.J. Wilson lost two of his own fingers in a fireworks accident.

Jason could also face a legal battle as a result of the fireworks accident. In the state of Florida, any firework “that becomes airborne or explodes is illegal to use,” according to Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue spokesman, Mike Jachles. Several police departments in South Florida are investigating the incident, according to FoxSports.com. Jason could potentially face a charge of criminal possession of fireworks.

Our thoughts are with Jason as he recovers. Get better soon, Jason!
