Sia, 39 may not be too keen on showing her face in public, but she is super candid when it comes to revealing her demons. The highly successful singer/songwriter opened up in a recent interview about the struggle with addiction that enabled her to write her smash hit “Chandalier.”
“I was a pill-popper,” the hit-maker shared with OK! Magazine, revealing that she became dependent on Xanax and OxyContin, after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
But alcohol soon proved to be an issue for Sia as well. Nervous and uncomfortable with the spotlight, she says she’d often drink to get through live performances during her US tour.
However, the turning point came for Sia after a September 2010 suicide attempt.
With her addiction and depression at an all time high after her boyfriend’s tragic death (he was hit and killed by a taxi driver only days before she was supposed to visit him in London), Sia made plans to check into a cheap hotel and purposely overdose.
Fortunately, a perfectly timed call from a dear friend stopped Sia in her tracks. She entered a recovery program and hasn’t looked back since. How awesome!
However, Sia’s adulthood struggle with prescription medication and alcohol wasn’t her first trouble with drugs. The singer admitted in June 2014 that she smoked a lot of marijuana as a teen — and suffered the consequences.
The singer/songwriter has been open about her battle with bipolar disorder, and she partially blames her early experimentation with drugs as the culprit.
“I don’t think it’s f****d up childhood [that caused my bi-polar disorder], in my case. I refrain from blaming anything on my parents. What I do think is that I smoked too much pot when I was a kid. I think it f****d my brain up,” she revealed to The Howard Stern Show.
Sia’s honesty is super refreshing — even if she refuses to show her face! What do you think HollywoodLifers? Do you feel like you understand Sia better after her revelation?
