Renfield will be released in theaters on April 14 by Universal Pictures. But first, the film will have its world premiere at the Overlook Film Festival on March 30. Renfield is expected to become available on Peacock sometime after its theatrical release. The film is rated R.
The first trailer for Renfield debuted on January 5. It shows Renfield saying he has to “get out of a toxic relationship” with his boss, Dracula. Renfield meets Rebecca Quincy and realizes if he stops focusing on Dracula’s needs, then his master won’t grow to full power.
In the final trailer, released March 22, Renfield is working for Dracula for 90 years, when he decides he “just wants a normal life again.” He falls in love with a cop who convinces him to rebel against Dracula. But Dracula declares to Renfield that “everyone you care about will suffer, because you betrayed me.”
Nicolas Cage plays Dracula in Renfield. His version of Dracula is ruthless and narcissistic. Nicolas went through a complete transformation to play Dracula in the film. It is Nicolas’ first live-action film by a major studio since 2011’s Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.
Nicholas Hoult stars as Dracula’s assistant, R. M. Renfield, the lead character of the film. Nicholas is best known for starring in the Hulu comedy series The Great. On the big screen, Nicholas has starred in Mad Max: Fury Road, The Favourite, The Menu, and the X-Men movies. Nicholas revealed in an interview with L’Officiel that he “ate quite a lot of bugs” for Renfield. The actor also said Renfield was a “fun take” on his character, who is normally in the background in the Dracula story.
Awkwafina stars as Renfield’s love interest, Rebecca Quincy. Rebecca is a traffic cop and she inspires Renfield to turn against Dracula. Awkwafina has appeared in the films Ocean’s 8, Crazy Rich Asians, Jumanji: The Next Level, The Farewell, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Chris McKay directed Renfield, from a screenplay by Ryan Ridley, based on an original idea by Robert Kirkman. This is Chris’ third director feature, after The Lego Batman Movie in 2017 and The Tomorrow War in 2021. Chris is also a producer with David Alpert, Bryan First, Sean Furst, and Robert Kirkman. Cinematographer Mitchell Amundsen and music composer Marco Beltrami round out the Renfield behind-the-scenes team. Skybound Entertainment is producing the film.
Renfield is going to deliver a modern take on the story of Dracula that has been told so many times before. The official synopsis for the film reads, “Renfield is forced to procure his master’s prey and do his every bidding, no matter how debased. But now, after centuries of servitude, Renfield is ready to see if there’s a life outside the shadow of The Prince of Darkness. If only he can figure out how to end his codependency. “
Director Chris McKay has already said that he wants a sequel to Renfield that is more about Dracula’s psyche. He told Total Film, “There are some minor moments here where you get to see some of the pathos in Dracula’s eyes… and that made me think that maybe one day I might like to try for a whole movie where you’re really understanding the psyche of the character. I didn’t really have the time to delve into that here.”
