Britney Spears was just 22 years old when Diane Sawyer, now 75, grilled her in a primetime interview about her then-recent split from longtime boyfriend, Justin Timberlake, her fashion choices and her influence on other young women.
Britney just got a chance to bite back at the journalist on December 13, sharing a lengthy Instagram post in which she called her out: “Do we dare forget the Diane Sawyer interview in my apartment almost 20 years ago??? What was with the ‘you’re in the wrong’ approach?? Geeze… and making me cry?” she wrote, reflecting back on the unforgettable 2003 interview.
Spears, now 40, is recently freed from being trapped in a conservatorship for 13 years against her will and she is finally able to speak out against the interview in which Sawyer seemed to accuse Brit of causing the painful split from Timberlake. “He has pretty much said you broke his heart. You did something that caused him so much pain, so much suffering. What did you do?” Sawyer asked at the time.
The singer now confessed in her Instagram post that her “manager put that woman (Sawyer) in my home and made me talk to her on national television… they forced me to talk!!! I was a baby… I was almost 22 and didn’t understand… but I f—ing know now,” she went on. Brit also writes on her Instagram that her breakup with Timberlake was so big that “I never spoke to anyone for a very long time.. I was in shock.”
Spears and Timberlake had been longtime teen sweethearts and so it’s easy to understand why Britney would have been reluctant to discuss the split at all, let alone do a major television interview. “I was in shock… pretty lame of my dad and three men to show up at my door when I could hardly speak,” she said of the time. Notably, Britney and Justin dated from 1999 – 2002 after developing a friendship as kids on The Mickey Mouse Club.
While Spears is finally speaking out and up for herself, she said she wished she had clapped back at the time. “I would like to say now ma’am I’m a catholic slut!!! You wanna join me at mass and I can serve your husband my certificate on shopping for anonymous players??? I should spend a thousand dollars if I want every day of my life and she can kiss my white a–,” she penned.
On the other hand, Spears used her post to celebrate her newly found freedom by going to an ATM and taking out $300 to buy chocolate, Christmas socks and a bottle of white wine — which are hardly extravagant. The star who is reportedly worth at least $60 million wrote for fans that “I’m able to have cash now so I went to an ATM and was so proud of my $300… and no, I’m not embarrassed to share this… well maybe a little… but I’m more embarrassed for my family for condoning the fact that I wasn’t allowed to have cash for so long when I worked my little ass off for them.”
