The first trailer for Silence showed just how much of a transformation Adam, 33, made for the movie. Adam is usually a solid and buff guy, but in Silence he nearly wasted away. Adam is shirtless in one scene in the trailer, giving viewers a preview as to just how much weight he lost. His arms are emaciated, and you can clearly see his ribs. He whittled down to skin-and-bones for the role. Adam told The Telegraph that he lost 30 pounds before filming began and another 20 pounds while shooting the movie.
Adam admitted in a chat with Interview that Martin asked him and co-star Andrew Garfield, 33, to lose weight. The movie tells the story of two 17th century Portuguese Jesuit priests who venture to a hostile Japan to find their mentor (Liam Neeson).
“When the movie begins, the characters have been traveling for two years, from Portugal to Macau, sailed around Africa. There’s disease and shortage of food,” Adam said. “They’re already kind of depleted when they get to Macau before their last leg to Japan. There’s a lot of storytelling happening off camera.”
Adam and Andrew “continue to lose weight” as the film goes on. “He wanted to see that physically. He asked us to lose a lot of weight. I didn’t know how much that was going to be.”
The Star Wars: The Force Awakens actor revealed he had never taken on a role as intense as this one. “I can’t control what’s happening in scenes, but I could control when I ate food,” Adam explained. “And that visual part of the storytelling, I don’t think I’ve ever taken it to the extreme before. It’s an interesting thing.”
Since filming has stopped, Adam has gained the weight he lost back. Silence will hit theaters on Dec. 23.
