Uh-oh! Nicki Minaj, 33, and Kanye West, 39, may have collaborated on a number of hot songs over the years, but Nicki threw some shade at Kanye in her cover story for the November issue of Marie Claire. In the issue, Nicki slammed the rapper for the racially motivated double standards and the sexist messages in his 2005 hit single “Gold Digger.”
“I’m so tired of black women feeling that when our men get rich, they’re going to leave them for a woman of a different race,” she told the magazine. Nicki referenced a line from Kanye’s song and even pointed out his current wife, Kim Kardashian, 35. “It wasn’t funny when Kanye said it [in his 2005 hit ‘Gold Digger’], ‘When he get on, he’ll leave your ass for a white girl’ — and Kanye happens to be with a white girl now,” she said. “It wasn’t funny when he said it; it was the f–king truth.” Whoa, Nicki wasn’t holding anything back.
Nicki, Kanye, and Kim have frequently been snapped at major Hollywood events together, so it’s a little weird that she would make these comments. But Nicki didn’t seem to be only singling Kimye out. She also pointed out the double standards that exist for women of color who pose semi-nude in various photo shoots or on social media. “When Kim Kardashian’s naked picture came out, [Sharon Osbourne, 64] praised it, and my fans attacked her for being such a hypocrite,” Minaj continued. “So it wasn’t trashy and raunchy when a white woman did it, but it was when a black woman did it? It’s quite pathetic and sad, but that is my reality, and I’ve gotten accustomed to just shutting it down.”
While Kimye fans might have something to say about the “Anaconda” rapper’s latest claims, this isn’t the first time Nicki has taken a stand against the double standards in the media. The rapper spoke out in July 2015 just before the MTV Video Music Awards after her racy video “Anaconda” failed to get nominated. Her Twitter rant infamously turned into a war of words between her and Taylor Swift, 26, who misunderstood Nicki’s comments to be pitting women against each other. Kim and Kanye have not responded to Nicki’s claims, but we have a feeling this won’t be the last time she speaks up about certain problems in the industry.
HollywoodLifers, what do you think about Nicki’s comments in Marie Claire? Do you think there a double standards in Hollywood?
