Mika Brzenzinski informed Morning Joe viewers that her co-host, Joe Scarborough, wouldn’t be in attendance for the Sept. 23 episode due to a family emergency, then expanded on the horrifying event that took place once day earlier. “Much of the team and I were there through the night,” she said. “His son Andrew [Scarborough] had a horrible accident — a head injury, a fractured skull — but they stabilized him.”
She explained that the 25-year-old fell down a flight of stairs, and is now being treated by the trauma team at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. Andrew confirmed on Twitter, “Andrew doing much better after a frightening day and long night. Our family thanks all for keeping Andrew in your thoughts and prayers. The neurologist asked Andrew questions this morning and ended up asking him his favorite team. He said “The Red Sox, who’ve won 8 in a row.” Phew — his mind is clearly working okay!
Andrew, who married his wife, Brianna Keller, in June, has Asperger’s, which is a form of autism. Joe confirmed his son’s diagnosis in an interview in 2005, during which he also questioned if an autism vaccine administered around that time is what caused the disease. Andrew is Joe’s first of two children from his first marriage to Melanie Hinton, although the pair divorced in 1999. Joe went on to marry Susan Waren, who he had two more kids with, in 2001, although they ended their relationship 12 years later.
