The April 24 episode of Glee honored Whitney Houston just two months after the singing legend’s tragic death. Am I the only one who thinks it’s a little soon? In my humble opinion, the episode felt a little forced, but was not without its bright moments.
The episode opened with Mercedes (Amber Riley), Santana (Naya Rivera), Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Rachel (Lea Michele) singing Whitney’s “How Will I Know” in the halls of McKinley High. The performance was stellar, but I kept getting distracted by the picture of Whitney that was being passed around. When did high school kids start bringing framed pictures of their idols to school?
After seeing the kids struggle with their emotions, Mr. Schuester (Matthew Morrison) turned to Emma (Jayma Mays), who helped him realize they’re only trying to cope with the end of high school. So, to help them express and explore what’s really going on with them, Will assigned them songs by Whitney.
When Kurt started to sense Blaine (Darren Criss) was pulling away from him, I immediately smelled trouble — and I was right! Kurt began swapping texts with Chandler, a boy he met at the sheet music store. Kurt claimed he liked the way Chandler made him feel, but he assured Rachel it was innocent. I’m inclined to say Kurt was cheating, especially given the fact that Chandler clearly had feelings for him. At the very least, Kurt was leading Chandler on.
Blaine confronted Kurt, but Kurt fired right back at him, throwing Blaine’s relationship with Sebastian (Grant Gustin) in his face. At that moment, it seemed like Klaine was done for. Thankfully, those Glee kids can sing their problems away! In all seriousness, after a heart-to-heart with Burt, Kurt took on “I Have Nothing” — singing his little heart out — and knocked Blaine’s argyle socks off.
Kurt and Blaine paid a visit to Emma, who was subbing in for a couples counsellor. During their session, Blaine admitted he was only acting distant because he was scared of losing Kurt to New York City. “I’m trying to practice what life is going to be like without you,” he told a teary-eyed Kurt. My heart melted a little right then and there.
Meanwhile, Joe (Samuel Larssen) was trying to cheer up a depressed Quinn (Dianna Agron), who wasn’t making any progress in physiotherapy. When Joe started going with her to her sessions, I thought, ‘Sorry, Artie! It looks like Quinn’s taken.’ But in spite of their obvious chemistry, Joe pulled away from Quinn right when they were about to kiss. Quinn assumed he was grossed out by her condition, but Joe was only trying to resist temptation. He’s a religious hippie, remember? In the end, Joe and Quinn decided to take things slow.
All the while, Will was pressuring Emma to move up their wedding. Emma was supportive at first, but ultimately helped Will confront his own fears about graduation. You see, Will was worried the New Directions would move on and wouldn’t come back for the wedding. But upon seeing the kids performing “My Love Is Your Love” in the auditorium, Will realized he has nothing to worry about.
Finally, I want to give a shout-out to Rachel and Santana, who killed it with their duet of “So Emotional” — I’m still blasting it in my apartment.
What did you think of tonight’s episode, HollywoodLifers? Will Kurt and Rachel get into NYADA? Will Quinn and Joe start dating? Will Kurt and Blaine break up?
