Nevermind was almost called Sheep

A 1990 entry in one of Kurt’s journals showed a mock ad for Nivana’s second album, entitled Sheep.  Bassist Krist Novaselic has been quoted in saying the name came from the band being “so cynical.”

Dave Grohl Is Not The Only Drummer On Nevermind.

Nevermind is the first Nirvana album to feature Dave Grohl as a drummer, having joined the band after Chad Channing left the group. But Chad’s drumming can be heard on “Polly.”

“Smells Like Teen Spirit” Owes A Lot To Disco

Grohl admitted he ripped off disco drumming for his parts in Nevermind. “If you listen to Nevermind… I pulled so much stuff from the Gap Band and Cameo and [Chic’s] Tony Thompson on every one of those songs.”

The Nevermind Baby Is Named Spencer Elden.

Arguably the most famous child in rock music, Spencer was four-months old when photographer Kirk Weddle (a friend of Spencer’s parents) took the now-iconic photo. In 2021, Spencer sued the surviving members of Nirvana, Weddle, and Geffen Records over ‘extreme and permanent emotional distress,” alleging the photo constitutes “child pornography.”

The ‘Nevermind Baby’ Was Almost A Girl

For the Nevermind cover art, Kirk Weddle initially photographed children at a school where babies learned to swim. Weddle initially liked photos of a girl who could “motor around underwater” – but Geffen Records picked the photo of Spencer.

Nevermind Wasn’t Immediately A Success

Nirvana released Nevermind on Sept. 24, 1991. It debuted at No. 144 on the Billboard 200, having sold 6,000 copies in its first week. Guns N’ Roses was No. 1 and No. 2, with Use Your Illusion II and I filling the top spots.

...But It Did Reach No. 1.

Nevermind eventually reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 on January 11, 1992. It dethroned Michael Jackson’s Dangerous. It spent more than 520 weeks on the Billboard 200, becoming the seventh album in history to do so.
