How To Make The St. Patty’s Day Staple
Choose any kind of meat and veggies combo you want for St. Patrick’s Day, but serve it without Irish Soda Bread, and you’re just doing it wrong.
The nice thing about Irish Soda Bread is that it’s very easy to put together with very little kneading and rising time, and just a few simple ingredients.
Aside from the usual suspects in making bread -- flour, butter, eggs, and sugar – the two ingredients that are essential for this recipe are baking soda and currants.
Because there is no yeast used, this quick bread needs baking soda and buttermilk to rise.
To start, mix the baking soda with your other dry ingredients: flour, sugar, and salt.
Using an electric mixer will be helpful with the next step, which will be adding cold, unsalted butter into ingredients until well mixed.
Your wet ingredients will include eggs and buttermilk, which can be added at this stage.
The last ingredient is the currants, which you can replace with raisins if you prefer. Just make sure to flour them a little before adding into the dough.
Now, give your dough a knead on a floured surface, but just enough to get it into a round shape. Don’t forget to cut an X on the top.
Into the oven for about an hour at 350 degrees and out will come the delicious quick bread!
