Time away doesn’t mean you have to abandon your workout routine.  Charlee Atkins, CSCS, Founder of Le Sweat, is here to give advice and tips on how to stay active on your holiday away.

While most vacations are booked as an opportunity to de-stress (R&R), get some sun (beach vacays), get some movement (ski or hiking trips), spend time with somebody (honeymoons, etc.), or by yourself (solo-trip), there are some ways to easily incorporate a workout to these trips.

ATKINS HAS TIPS FOR EVERY KIND OF VACATION YOU’RE PLANNING!

"

If you’re looking to De-Stress: Movement is a great way to de-stress. Keep in mind a workout doesn’t have to be stressful (e.g., HIIT class). It can be more low-impact and mindful (yoga, walking on the beach, walking on the treadmill)

"

If you’re looking to soak in the rays on the beach: A great way to explore the beach is on a morning run or brisk walk. Remember, workouts don’t have to happen in the gym!

"

If you’re on a couples trip or a girls getaway:  A great way to spend 30 minutes of the day is to do a quick/fun, efficient workout to get the endorphins flowing.

"

If you’re already skiing or hiking on your trip: Okay, this trip is a workout. Maybe add some yoga/stretch classes to balance all that activity!

"

If you’re traveling solo or for business:  Time is your friend on this trip. Take a hike, go for a walk, see the sights, or stream a bodyweight workout from your hotel room with your favorite workout app.

"

One of the best ways to settle into a new time zone is to sync with the time zone. Start your morning with an energizing workout to beat that afternoon crash!

"

SPEAKING OF BUSINESS, ATKINS RECOMMENDS THAT YOU TRY TO BREAK A SWEAT RIGHT WHEN YOU LAND OR THE FIRST THING IN THE MORNING, ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE TRAVELING OUT OF YOUR TIME ZONE.

If your hotel doesn’t have a gym, select compound exercises or exercises that involve more than one joint and one muscle group to do in your room. Atkins recommends squats, lunges, and push-ups.

ANOTHER TIP

When I travel, I always compare amenities when selecting a hotel. I check for photos on TripAdvisor and see what the gym looks like. I also opt to book my travel using my Citi Custom Cash Card and use the card for any purchases, including restaurants, fitness clubs, and entertainment, during my trip because I automatically earn 5% cash back on my top eligible spend category each billing cycle and 1% cash back on everything else. It takes the guesswork out of maximizing my rewards so I can focus on enjoying my trip and helps me earn cash for my next getaway.
