Sweet sendoffs, new suitors, a surprise engagement and baby mama drama made us laugh and cry during the season five ‘Christmas Special.’
The episode begins with the house preparing for a trip to Brancaster Castle, where they’ll visit Rose’s rude in-laws. Unfortunately Anna is still in jail so Mr. Bates stays behind, as does the Dowager Countess. The Russian Prince’s wife has been found and the Dowager orchestrates the long-awaited reunion for the couple.
Before Rose can live happily ever after she’ll have to make sure her parents are on their best behavior — and a scandalous course of events at the bachelor party threatens her big day.
The episode opens on a jovial note as the women of Downton watch Rose try on clothes as she prepares for her wedding, which will be held in London to appease Atticus’ father. While the bride-to-be couldn’t be more excited for her big day it won’t be an easy walk to the altar — that’s for sure.

Any ounce of hope that Lady Edith was holding on to that Mr. Gregson would be found alive was shattered when they receive news of his murder — and she begins to sink further into despair. Girl just can’t catch a break. An editor from the paper meets with Edith and Robert to tell them that Gregson was murdered in Munich and Edith has inherited the publishing house. Although her widowed sister lost the love of her life not too long ago, Lady Mary doesn’t have a shred of sympathy for her sister.
Cora has a lot of explaining to do! The scandal reached an all-time high this week as Lord Grantham returned early and was surprised by quite the sight — and in his very own bedroom!
Although Lord Grantham made it clear that he didn’t like the fact that Mr. Bricker was coming to stay at Downton that didn’t stop him from “coming to see a painting” — which by now, we all know, is code for trying to get Cora in bed. What a coincidence that the night he planned on visiting is the very same night Robert was going out of town for a dinner?
The women in ‘Downton’ are total heartbreakers this week…and they can’t seem to escape their suitors. A new proposal, a love triangle and a change of heart rocked this week’s episode.
Unrequited love is taking over Downton! Who would have ever thought the day would come where Robert would tease his mama about her old “beau”? Episode three begins with Lady Mary and Lord Gillingham in bed on the last day of their secret sex trip — and Tony seems more smitten than ever before with Mary…but unfortunately it doesn’t look like their sexytime has her any more convinced that he should be her next husband. Ever a lady, Mary tells him that nothing further will happen until everything is properly “announced, organized and executed.”
