Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg: Photos — Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is seen in her Supreme Court chambers in Washington back. Ruth was born on March 15, 1933 in Brooklyn, New York. After graduating from James Madison High School, she attended Cornell University to study Government and joined a sorority. At the school, she met her future husband and the two tied the knot just a month after her graduation. The two share children Jane and James.

After attending Cornell, Ruth studied law at Harvard — and was notably one of nine women in her class of 500. Later, she transferred to Columbia Law School. As she began applying for employement and clerk positions, Ruth faced discrimination due to her gender — however, pursued a path in academia as a professor. A trailblazer for equality, she co-founded the Women’s Rights Project at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) in 1972.

She was nominated to a seat on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit by President Jimmy Carter on April 14, 1980, confirmed by the United States Senate on June 18, 1980. In 1993, she was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Bill Clinton. Ruth battled cancer throughout her career, being diagnosed with colon cancer in 1999. She underwent surgery again for pancreatic cancer in 2009. Ruth sadly passed away on Sept. 18, 2020 after continuing to battle pancreatic cancer.
