Queen Elizabeth II Through the Years: Remember the Monarch on the First Anniversary of Her Death

Queen Elizabeth II was one of the world’s most famous figures since her birth on April 21, 1926. The British monarch ascended to the throne in 1953 after her father King George VI’s death. She has been an emblem of British society for decades, enduring wars, triumphs, scandal, and tumult across the world, as queen regnant of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan, and Ceylon, as well as Head of the Commonwealth. In 2022 she celebrated her Platinum Jubilee, making her the British Empire’s longest-reigning monarch. She passed away at age 96 on Sep. 8, 2022.

Through her 70-year reign, Queen became a symbol of Britain’s resilience and poise. (And over the years she’s made quite the impact with her prim but colorful sense of fashion.) Her life story is even gripping enough to have earned its own Netflix series, the much-revered ‘The Crown’.
