Jill and her husband, President Joe Biden were married in June 1977. It was the second marriage for both. Jill had previously been married to Bill Stevenson, but they separated in 1974 and their divorce was finalized the following year.

Joe and Jill first met when they were set up on a blind date by Joe’s brother, Frank, in 1975. He proposed several times before she finally accepted, with her wariness due to a reluctance to be in the spotlight amidst Joe’s rising political career. Joe and Jill had a daughter, Ashley, in 1981, and Jill also helped Joe raise Beau and Hunter after their mother’s death.
