Janet Jackson — The youngest member of the Jackson family has grown up to be one of music’s biggest icons. Janet Jackson may have grown up in the shadow of her famous brothers, specifically the King of Pop Michael Jackson, but she quickly proved that she was her own star and her own woman. After releasing two records – 1982’s Janet Jackson and the follow-up, 1984’s Dream Street – Janet broke away from her father, Joe Jackson, and broke through with 1986’s Control. By teaming up with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Janet established her own identity and her own sound. Control spanwed five top five singles, including “Nasty.” The following album, Rhythm Nation, transformed Janet from a singer to an icon. From there, she followed it with Janet, he now-legendary topless Rolling Stone cover, her film debut in Poetic Justice, and a collaboration on Michael’s 1995 record HIStory. While Janet’s commercial success dipped after the year 2000, her star power has never waned as she remains one of the most iconic and well-respected artists in history.
