The UK native most recently appeared at the Star Wars Celebration event in Europe in Apr. 2023, and amid the news of his passing on May 22, 2023, a reporter took to Twitter to mourn the late 58-year-old with a video of him from the event.

“I can’t believe the news about Ray Stevenson. I interviewed him recently at Star Wars Celebration and he was one of my favourites of the many I chatted to at the event. What a dude, who championed not more warriors like Ahsoka in Star Wars but more Divine Feminine characters,” the journalist captioned the clip. Amid the somber news of his passing, here are five things to know about Ray.

What Happened To Ray Stevenson?

News of Ray’s death broke on May 22, 2023, about one day after he died in Italy, according to his rep via CNN. Sadly, the Rome series alum died just four days ahead of his 59th birthday, according to The Sun. No additional details regarding his sudden passing were given and an official cause of death has not been reported at this time. Ray was born in Lisburn, United Kingdom, on May 25, 1964.

Ray landed his breakout role in Punisher: War Zone in 2008 and later would have continued success in shows like Rome and 2022’s Memory. Most recently, we was cast in the Star Wars spinoff series, Ahsoka, alongside 44-year-old actress Rosario Dawson. In light of his passing, she took to Twitter on May 22 to publicly grieve her co-star. “Sharing in grief with you all. What a Ray of light. Been calling cast/crew & the rest of my family to say how much I love them. Let this be your reminder to love on your people’s in real time while you can. Ray was so vivacious & unbelievably present & vibrant. He truly lived!!!”, she penned at the time.

Was Ray Stevenson Married?

Although he was not married at the time of his death, Ray was once married to Fever Pitch alum Ruth Gemmell. The pair got married over 25 years ago in 1997 and decided to divorce in 2005. Some of Ruth’s most recent acting credits include appearing in the hit Netflix series, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story and Bridgerton. According to The Sun, Ray and Ruth did not welcome children together.

Did Ray Stevenson Have Kids?

After Ray parted from Ruth, he moved on and found love with Elisabetta Caraccia, according to PEOPLE. The late Hollywood heartthrob and the anthropologist ended up welcoming not one, but two sons together. Their eldest, Sebastiano Derek Stevenson, was born in Dec. 2007. Although it is reported that they also shared a son named, Leonardo George Stevenson, it is not publicly known when he was born.

Amid the somber news of Ray’s passing, many of his fans took to Twitter to mourn him on May 22, 2023. “RIP to Ray Stevenson. Memorable and great in every role, but he has one of my favorite beats in THE OTHER GUYS. If the news is true, he will be missed,” one admirer wrote, along with a clip of Ray in the 2010 film. Later, the official RRR film took to Twitter to pen a sweet message of the fallen actor. “What shocking news for all of us on the team! Rest in peace, Ray Stevenson. You will stay in our hearts forever, SIR SCOTT,” the account wrote.
