D’Sean Perry: Everything To Know About UVA Football Player Killed In Shooting

The linebacker was identified as one of the victims in the shooting at the college, which killed three people. The shooting suspect is in custody.

D’Sean Perry was shot and killed during the shooting at the University of Virginia on Sunday, November 13. Police announced that D’Sean was one of the three victims, along with Devin Chandler and Lavel Davis in a press conference, per NBC 29. Two more people were injured. Police also arrested the suspect Christopher Darnell Jones and charged him with murder. The suspect was reportedly also on the roster for the UVA team during his freshman year in 2018.

After the shooting, police ordered the campus for a shelter-in-place to try to find the suspect. After he was arrested, police announced he’d been taken in, in a tweet. “Police have the suspect in custody. This is the final alert message,” the message read. 1. D’Sean was a linebacker for UVA

D’Sean had made nine appearances for the UVA Cavaliers during his time at the school. He was a junior. While he didn’t play in any games during his freshman year in 2019, he played twice during the 2020 season. During the 2021 season, D’Sean played in 7 games and made a tackle during a match against Duke, according to his bio on the UVA website. 

2. D’Sean was originally from Miami.

Before heading to Virginia, D’Sean was born and raised in Miami, Florida. He notably played as a linebacker and tight end for his high school team at Gulliver Prep. He had gotten 199 tackles during his high school career. Besides football, he was also a member of his high school basketball team.

3. He was named Defensive Player of the Year in high school

Given his excellent football abilities, D’Sean received much praise during his time at Gulliver Prep. During his senior year, he had 89 tackles, including 3 sacks. His high school team finished with an 8-4 record and went to the playoffs, before losing in the semifinals. He was named the “Defensive Player Of The Year” in 2018.

4. D’Sean’s father mourned his death in a tweet.

After D’Sean’s death, his father reportedly took to Twitter and released a statement about his son, which has since been deleted, according to WSLS“I always told my son I love U & just keep working. I believe he let me know something tonight. I knew something was wrong. I love u man,” he wrote.

The university’s President Jim Ryan also mourned the loss of the three students who were killed in a statement that he tweeted out, before the suspect was arrested. “I am heartbroken to report that the shooting has resulted in three fatalities,” he wrote. “I am holding the victims, their families, and all members of the University of Virginia community in my heart today, and we will make plans to come together as a community as soon as the suspect is apprehended.”

5. The two other victims of the shooting were also UVA players

Like D’Sean, the other two victims were also players for the UVA football team. Devin was a wide receiver, originally from Huntersville, North Carolina. Lavel was also a wide receiver from Dorchester, South Carolina. After the shooting the UVA Men’s Basketball team announced that they would be cancelling their game on Monday night in a tweet.
