Knock At The Cabin will undoubtedly have moviegoers on the edge of their seats as M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller unfolds. The new film, out everywhere on February 3, follows a family of three whose world is turned upside down when their rental cottage is besieged by four complete strangers. This group claims that the family, consisting of Andrew (Ben Aldridge), Eric (Jonathan Groff), and their daughter, Wen (Kristen Cui), has to sacrifice a member of their in order to save the world.
When it comes to Shyamalan movies, always expect the unexpected. On top of that, you always have to gear up for one final twist at the end. So, what exactly happened in Knock At The Cabin?
Andrew and Eric don’t believe the story that Leonard (Dave Bautista), Sabrina (Nikki Amuka-Bird), Adriane (Abby Quinn), and Redmond (Rupert Grint) tell them about the end of the world. The mood shifts when one of the invaders sacrifices themselves every time Andrew and Eric refuse to sacrifice a member of their family. Every time one of the strangers dies, a “plague” is unleashed upon the earth — massive earthquakes, a flu epidemic, and planes start to fall from the sky.
Andrew remains committed to his belief that the strangers are lying and suffering from shared delusions. Andrew also realizes that Redmond is the man who attacked him in a bar years earlier because he is gay.
During the initial raid on the cottage, Eric suffered a concussion. Over the course of the film, you can tell that Eric begins to lean towards believing the strangers. One by one, the strangers die in front of Andrew, Eric, and Wen. Leonard is the last to go. He warns Andrew and Eric that they’ll only have a few minutes to decide about making a sacrifice once he dies. If they refuse, humanity as they know it will end, and only the three of them will be left.
“All of humanity has been judged,” Leonard says before taking his own life. Suddenly, dark clouds descend over the cottage.
What Happens At The End Of Knock At The Cabin?
Eric admits that he saw a “figure in the light,” and Andrew says that he believes him. Eric points out that this wasn’t just a random home invasion. The four strangers are actually the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
Eric wants to make the sacrifice now. Andrew offers to die as well. Eric tells Andrew that he is at peace with his sacrifice. Andrew kills Eric with his gun. “Did Daddy Eric save everyone?” Wen asks when Andrew goes to get her in the treehouse.
A fire burns down the cottage with Eric and the others inside. Andrew and Wen walk through the smoldering woods as rain falls around them. Andrew finds a truck and a set of keys. It’s the truck the strangers drove before coming to the cottage. Andrew looks through Leonard, Redmond, Adriane, and Sabrina’s things in the backseat. Andrew realizes that all the things they said about their personal lives were true.
Andrew and Wen drive away and make a pit stop at a diner. They see on the news that the catastrophes have stopped. Andrew finally realizes that the strangers were always telling the truth and that Eric’s sacrifice did actually stop the world from ending.
In the final moments of the movie, Andrew and Wen get a sign from Eric. When they get back in the truck, “Boogie Shoes” begins to play on the radio. This song meant a lot to Eric, and this is clearly a sign from him that everything is going to be okay.
