During the Feb. 9 midseason premiere of ‘The Walking Dead,’ fans were (albeit briefly) forced to consider the reality of the show ditching its longtime lead, Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln). Of course they didn’t actually go through with it — but should they?

Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), his hair, and that crazy southern accent (Caaah-rul) have been front and center in The Walking Dead universe since its television inception, but the Feb. 9 episode “After” forced us to consider a different reality — could the show go on with Carl (Chandler Riggs) as its lead?

What do you do when you spend years of your life navigating a post-apocalyptic hellscape, manage to find a surrogate family and comfortable life in this hellscape despite its impossible circumstances, then have that comfortable life and family brutally taken away from you, again? That’s the question the The Walking Dead‘s Season 4 midseason premiere found itself asking, and we can confirm that at least three characters have found their answer.

New ‘Walking Dead’ Season 4 Trailer: Is Rick Grimes Gone For Good?

So much bad went down on ‘The Walking Dead”s December midseason finale that we needed the two month break to process it all, and now AMC has released a brand new trailer for the second half of the season that clearly shows that things are only getting worse — especially for Rick.

How much longer can Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) possibly hold on after losing everyone and everything he loves? This seems to be the main takeaway from the new Walking Dead trailer, which shows Rick in a terrifying state — and his son Carl (Chandler Riggs) trying his best to keep dear old dad alive and well.
