‘Sweetbitter’ has found its Tess — and it seems pretty perfect. Ella Purnell landed the roll of Tess, the book’s heroin who finds her way and finds herself in the restaurant world in New York. So, who is Ella?
Sweetbitter, the novel that took the world by storm in 2016 about a woman coming of age while working at a New York City restaurant, is about to hit the small screen. Starz greenlit the drama series for six, half-hour, steamy episodes, based on the novel by Stephanie Danler. The description of the show is a savory one:
Sweetbitter follows 22-year-old Tess who, shortly after arriving in New York City, lands a job at a celebrated downtown restaurant. Swiftly introduced to the world of drugs, alcohol, love, lust, dive bars, and fine dining, she learns to navigate the chaotically alluring, yet punishing life she has stumbled upon. This is the story of a young woman’s coming-of-age, set against the rich and grimy backdrop of exclusive restaurants, conjuring a nonstop and high-adrenaline world evoking the possibility, beauty, and fragility of being young and adrift.
Now Starz has announced it will be Ella Purnell, 21, who is taking on the role of Tess. So, who is she? Here’s what you need to know:
She’s British. Ella was born and raised in London, where she still resides with her mother.
Her first film was in 2010. She starred in Never Let Me Go, and from there her career took off. Since, she’s starred in 11 films, including Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.
She has quite the voice. If you follow her on Instagram, you’ll see random jam sessions she’s had with friends and this girl can sing.
This will be her second TV role. She starred in Cyberbully in 2015.
She’s a fan of the book. When Stephanie tweeted the casting news, she retweeted it, writing, “AAHHHH! Obsessed with your book! Cannot. Wait. X.”
