You loved Tyler Cody’s vocals in 2AM Club — and now, he’s solo on a brand new track. We chatted with the singer exclusively about the inspiration behind ‘Cheap Situation’ and what’s next.
2AM fans obviously know you and the band’s sound — what’s different about solo Tyler Cordy?
Tyler Cordy: This new project I’ve been really trying to take a cinematic, storytelling approach to my writing — like if rap music was being done through the lens of a filmmaker. Somewhere between Nelly and David Fincher. My hope is you can really dive into the music, close your eyes and be able to walk around in these little vignettes. It’s definitely darker at times than the 2AM stuff was, but we also have some summer records on deck. Bottom line I just hope its good.
To you feel you have more freedom now?
Being on a major label, especially at the time we were signed, it was a bit paralyzing creatively; a lot of that was nobody’s fault but mine. Working totally independently has allowed me to focus inward and go with my gut a lot more. Being in a band you find amazing things through collaboration, but you have to cut off your creative juices at points and let others lead. Freedoms weird though, some days I feel it and some days I feel trapped and want to move to a farm.
Is it nerve racking at all thinking of performing without the band?
Yes for sure. Anything that’s a drastic change is nerve wracking, and I spent years with those guys learning how to be an artist and a human. But on the other hand, performing is one of the few things in life I actually have years of experience doing, so there’s always level of comfortability there.
What’s your inspiration behind the single? Did you write it as well or work with a team?
I met a stripper once on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, so its loosely based on that. More broadly, it came from the idea that you can have deeply important things occur in settings or moments that may seem to be passing or unimportant. I wrote it with Dan Edinberg, a really cool dude and great producer, he’s been building a lot of my new project with me and is a great guy to sit and bang out ideas with. Hi Dan.
Well today I’m gonna probably drink my 2nd cup of coffee and I may hit Bed, Bath & Beyond if there’s time. Music wise, I’m gonna keep putting out songs and get back on tour later this year. I think I’m writing pretty decent stuff so, I hope people like it. Also follow me on twitter, I got some great dad jokes popping on there.
