On Thursday, June 1, a brand new champion will be crowned in the 2017 Scripps National Spelling Bee. The final round of the 90th annual competition will take place in Oxon Hill, Maryland, starting at 8:30pm ET and going until 10:30pm ET. For those of you who want to watch, head on over to WatchESPN for a live stream of the National Spelling Bee. There you’ll be able to watch as the final competitors go head-to-head spelling words you’ve probably never even heard before until one final person is standing.
In the previous years of the National Spelling Bee, two winners have beenv crowned due to repeated ties. Due to that, the officials have altered the rules to help avoid yet another tie. All remaining spellers will be taking a “Tiebreaker Test”, reports Reuters, which has 12 spelling words and 12 multiple-choice questions on vocabulary. If for some reason the competition comes down to a tie, the speller with the higher tie breaker score will be crowned the winner. Sounds fair, right?
When the Scripps National Spelling Bee started on Wednesday, May 31, there were 291 spellers competing. The spellers have been thinning out throughout the48 hour competition, and only one will be crowned on Thursday night. No pressure, guys!
