‘World of Dance’ is like nothing you’ve ever seen on TV before. Jennifer Lopez, Derek Hough, Ne-Yo and Jenna Dewan-Tatum are ready to kick off the dance competition on May 30, but what exactly is it?
When World of Dance was first announced, many made comparisons to other dance competition shows — but it’s actually very different! “So You Think You Can Dance is amazing, but it’s very technical, and if you’re not a dancer sometimes it can feel a little polarizing in terms of watching it,” host and mentor, Jenna Dewan-Tatum told The Hollywood Reporter in a new interview about World of Dance. “With World of Dance, it was very much our intention to open it up to the masses. We wanted to invite people in and teach them a little bit about dance, but really make it more of an experience.”
Jenna will be hosting the show, alongside the star-studded judges, Jennifer Lopez, Derek Hough, and Ne-Yo, and they’re all aware that it’s tough to get a dancing competition show as popular as a singing show. “There hasn’t been a dance competition to put its money where its mouth is,” Derek told THR. “I’m a huge fan of all things dance, but what I love about this show is we’re really putting a lot behind these dancers.” Jenna added that since the community is “very niche,” it took time but they’ve found a way to get dancers to love it and audiences wanting to dance and have fun.
World of Dance will be divided into three devisions — Junior, Upper, and Team; each will compete for four elimination rounds and the winner of each division will go against the other for the grand prize of $1 million. “I remember my days of dancing and having pizza, only a slice (to last) all day, and going to dance classes and trying to make an audition,” JLo told USA Today. “It’s a hard life. This is about creating opportunities for people.”
HollywoodLifers, will you be watching? World of Dance premieres at 10PM ET on NBC.
