We’ll never get to see what Disney and LucasFilms had planned for Carrie Fisher in ‘Star Wars: Episode IX,’ but it was something huge. In a new interview with the head of LucasFilms as well as the director and cast, we got a few secrets about ‘The Last Jedi,’ and a peak into what she taught everyone.
Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa completed filming The Last Jedi last summer, but afterward she spoke to LucasFilm president, Kathleen Kennedy, and got excited about Episode IX. “She was having a blast. The minute she finished, she grabbed me and said, ‘I’d better be at the forefront of IX!,’” Kathleen remembered in a new cover story with Vanity Fair. “Because Harrison [Ford] was front and center on VII, and Mark [Hamill] is front and center on VIII. She thought IX would be her movie. And it would have been.”
Carrie passed away at age 60 on Dec. 27, and since then, the team at Disney has been working to try and figure out how Episode IX will work without her — because they will not be using CGI, although the young Carrie was imposed into Rogue One: A Star Wars. “We don’t have any intention of beginning a trend of re-creating actors who are gone,” Kathleen added. In the interview, the cast also mourned Carrie; newer cast members, Daisy Ridley and John Boyega both beamed over how much they had learned from her.
“Carrie lived her life the way she wanted to, never apologizing for anything, which is something I’m still learning,” Daisy, 25, told the magazine. “‘Embarrassed’ is the wrong word, but there were times through it all when I felt like I was… shrinking. And she told me never to shrink away from it—that it should be enjoyed.” John, 25, also added that when he became the first Black storm trooper, and started hearing racist remarks, Carrie reassured him. “I remember—and forgive me, I’m going to drop the f-bomb, but that’s just Carrie—she said, ‘Ah, boohoo, who fu-kin’ cares? You just do you.’ Words like that give you strength. I bore witness in a million ways to her sharing her wisdom with Daisy too.”
