How wild is this? Katy Perry is reportedly getting $25 million to be a judge on ‘American Idol’ when it returns in 2018, making for one of the hugest TV paychecks we’ve ever heard of. Do you think she’s getting overpaid?
Fans can’t wait to see Katy Perry, 32, serve as a judge on the newly-resurrected American Idol, but she comes with a staggering price tag, as TMZ reports on May 22. The “Chained to the Rhythm” singer’s paycheck will be $25 million, as sources tell the site, and she apparently had “leverage” because the ABC network was “desperate to sign a name before the Upfronts” that took place the week of May 15. So Katy took them for all they’re worth!
As we know, ABC announced on May 16 that Katy would be the lead judge. “Katy had all the leverage. If ABC ended up announcing the show without a judge, they’d be screwed,” an insider familiar with the negotiations tells TMZ. Katy previously turned down an offer of $20 million to be a judge on the show in 2012, as TMZ also reported, but you know what they say: everything has a price! $25 million is Katy’s, it would seem. And she doesn’t even have to sing!
As an aside, the network is also signing a deal with Ryan Seacrest, 42, for him to host once again, as TMZ claims. Ryan and judge Jennifer Lopez, 47, each made $15 million per season of Idol, as insiders tell the site, but now that Katy’s paycheck is out in the open, we wouldn’t be surprised if Ryan pushes for way more moola, too! Anyway, ABC has until next year to figure it all out, as they’ve announced the show will air as part of the 2017-18 season. Good luck!
