In Billy Bush’s first interview since tapes of his lewd conversations with Donald Trump from 2005 leaked, the former ‘Today’ show host reveals exactly how he felt when he first saw the shocking footage.
Billy Bush is breaking his silence on that controversial “p***y grabbing” video that leaked in October 2016. The footage, which was recorded in 2005, showed Billy cracking up as Donald Trump talked at length about groping women, as well as his attempt to seduce Nancy O’Dell. Looking back, the former talk show host says he’s absolutely mortified at the video. “I heard it for the first time seven and a half months ago, three days before the rest of the world heard it,” Billy tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I was shocked and alarmed and totally and completely gutted. It was awful. And my participation was awful, too.”
He adds that he was a very “insecure” person at the time the video was recorded, desperate to fit in with the celebrities he was interviewing. “I went way too far in my desire to keep this No. 1 star happy,” he admits. The scandal led to Billy resigning from his job at the Today show, however, he says he understands why the tape had to go public. After all, Donald Trump was campaigning to become the President of the United States at the time.
“I [thought] it would certainly be interesting for people to know because I think a lot of people were making up their minds about [Trump],” he reveals. “So, yes, I understand that people would want to know about it. You never thought to go to your NBC bosses and say, ‘Hey, there’s a tape you should listen to here.’ They did that on their own. I didn’t need to. Enough people knew.”
Billy appears to be very much remorseful in this first interview since the scandal, although he admits he has no idea if Trump feels the same. He actually hasn’t even talked to the president since before he announced Trump campaign to run. “I don’t know who he is,” Billy explains. “We don’t have a personal relationship and never have.”
