Olympic gold medalist Lauren Holiday shared the first photo of herself after having major surgery to remove a tumor from her brain seven months ago. The USWNT champion celebrated Mother’s Day by revealing details about the condition discovered during her pregnancy.
Lauren Holiday, 29, found out that she had a benign brain tumor that required surgery when she was five months pregnant. The two-time Olympic gold medalist from the US Women’s National Soccer Team made the incredibly brave decision to hold off on surgery for the meningioma until after she gave birth to her daughter, Jrue Taylor, in September 2016. Now, seven months after having the major surgery, she’s shared a photo of herself with her fans in honor of Mother’s Day. The beautiful pic showed Lauren and her radiant self in a “girl power” tee, smiling widely at the camera with a patch over her right eye. She’s still recuperating from the surgery, but she’s thriving!
“I have been hiding myself from a camera for the past 7 months,” Lauren wrote. “I didn’t want anyone to see my paralyzed face, my eye that is now crossed, the bald spots from radiation & my half shaved head. Granted you can’t see any of those things in this picture, just a patch…it’s a huge step. Today reminded me just how incredibly strong women are. The resilience of our bodies, the power of our minds, the ability to put other humans fully before ourselves, our compassionate hearts but most of all our undying love for our families, our friends and our precious babies.”
Beautiful! Lauren’s been through hell and back since discovering she had the condition in the middle of her pregnancy. Though meningioma isn’t life-threatening, the tumor that grows on tissue surrounding the brain and spinal cord gave the soccer star constant, excruciating headaches. She suffered through them for four months to get the surgery after she gave birth to her adorable daughter.
In February, she posted on Instagram that “I have never quite known suffering like I experienced in the last six months.” That’s absolutely terrible. Her husband, NBA star Jrue Holiday, 26, took an indefinite leave from the league to take care of her and the baby during the difficult time. And it seems now that things are really getting better!
