How much more can Shonda Rhimes do? She already rules ABC’s drama lineup with TGIT, and the network just announced that will continue with a ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ spinoff.
Shondaland just got a little more populated. At the ABC Television Network upfront presentation, Channing Dungey announced ABC has picked up a new drama straight to series — a spinoff of Grey’s Anatomy. The show will be set in a Seattle firehouse, and will follow a group of heroic firefighters. It will “follow these brave men and women as they risk their lives and their hearts both in the line of duty and off the clock,” the release read.
“No one can interweave the jeopardy firefighters face in the line of duty with the drama in their personal lives quite like Shonda, and Grey’s signature Seattle setting is the perfect backdrop for this exciting spinoff,” Channing said in a press release. We all know she can make a good show — ie., Grey’s, How to Get Away with Murder and Scandal, which will end after season seven.
However, I have a question: why call it a spinoff? Can’t it just be a new show on ABC from Shonda? I’m pretty sure that no matter what she creates, people will watch. Who from Grey’s will it focus on? The spinoffs work for NBC’s Chicago franchises because we fall in love with the characters before they land their own show.
Why not just have an all new show and feature some easter eggs? What do you think? HollywoodLifers, do you want a Grey’s Anatomy spinoff?
