Ever since Ariel Winter was 14 years old, she’s been essentially raised by her sister, Shanelle, following a falling out with her mother. So, on Mother’s Day, the actress made sure to send a special message to Shanelle to thank her for all she’s done.
Ariel Winter, 19, does not have a relationship with her mother, Chrisoula Workman. In fact, in 2014, the Modern Family star’s sister, Shanelle Gray, was granted legal guardianship of a then 16-year-old Ariel, although she was raising her long before that. Basically, Shanelle is the only mother Ariel has ever known, and she took to Instagram on Mother’s Day to make sure her big sis knows how appreciative she is for all her love and support over the years.
“Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible mothers,” she wrote, alongside a photo of herself hugging and kissing her sis. “I was lucky enough to have an unbelievable sister who raised me to be the woman I am today. I wouldn’t be anywhere without her love and guidance. She’s my rock and my best friend in the entire world. There’s no one more loving, caring, smart and beautiful inside and out as Shanelle Gray. She’s the best mom, wife, sister, friend and business woman in the world :) Skylar, Parker, David and I are beyond lucky. What you for all you are. You are so appreciated and loved.”
Shanelle and Chrisoula battled for more than two years over guardianship of Ariel, with Shanelle alleging that Chrisoula had been physically and emotionally abusive toward the teenager. Shanelle was granted guardianship in 2014, and Ariel became officially emancipated in May 2015.
