Welcome to the Enchanted Forest at a time of great upheaval. We meet a mystery man and his daughter. She has the storybook! It’s the realm’s only hope at defeating the darkness. He sends her off to find safety and tells her to share these stories. He believes that one day someone will believe them.
Back in Storybrooke, the Black Fairy’s curse hits. So what happens to everyone? Henry wakes up on the roof where Emma and Hook’s wedding took place with the storybook still in his hand. He walks down the street and runs into Archie, who doesn’t know anything about the Black Fairy or her curse. Emma’s currently locked away in the Storybrooke Sanitarium, where she’s been for 2 years. She doesn’t believe Snow White, Prince Charming, Captain Hook are real. She thinks everything Henry has told her about fairytales is nothing but lies.
Regina is nowhere to be found. The Black Fairy is Henry’s other mother and the mayor. She takes the storybook from Henry and dangles freedom in front of Emma’s face. She wants Emma to burn the storybook so Henry’s hope will be lost. Emma refuses to burn the book. She’s know it would crush Henry.
‘We Fought For Our Love & We Won’
Snow, David, Regina, and Hook wake up in the Enchanted Forest, in the cathedral where Snow and David got married. Talk about some cruel irony for Hook. They realize the final battle isn’t just a physical battle. It’s a battle for Emma’s soul, for her belief. Zelena arrives with the Mad Hatter’s hat to show the crew what the Black Fairy is really trying to accomplish. She wants to destroy all the realms of story and everyone in them.
The only way to get back to Emma and Henry is with magic. Regina brings everyone back to her castle to get to work. She doesn’t care what kind of magic it takes, she’s going to get her family back. Hook goes off on his own, and David soon joins him. YES! It’s time for another bromantic adventure with these two! Hook finds the beanstalk and is ready to climb it, just like he did on his first adventure with Emma. At first, David thinks Hook has a death wish. But Hook is willing to do anything to get back to Emma. “We made each other better,” he says. “Emma and I were never a pre-destined love story guaranteed a happy ending. We fought for our love and we won.” (My heart is literally exploding with Captain Swan feels!)
Hook and David climb the beanstalk together. They make it to the top. Hook manages to find the bean, but he wakes up Maleficent! Meanwhile, Regina and Zelena are hard at work at the castle when the Evil Queen arrives. Everything is going well with Robin, but everyone in that wish realm thinks she murdered Snow and Charming. She agrees to help out her other half and sister.
Rumple and Gideon are still in Storybrooke. Belle is gone. Something really bad happened. Rumple brings Belle’s beloved book, My Handsome Hero, to Gideon. Gideon doesn’t think of Belle as his mother. He thinks Belle abandoned him when he was a baby. He’s been told that Belle said she was going to the store and never came back. Rumple wants to know the whole story, but Gideon doesn’t want to hear it. Rumple demands to know what happenened to Belle. Using the worst photoshopped photos ever, Fiona tells him that Belle’s off seeing the world.
Henry breaks Emma out of the sanitarium. He brings her to the roof, the last place she was before the curse hit. He tells her all about her wedding, but she doesn’t believe him until she starts to see flashes of memory. But she doesn’t trust herself. She’s doubting herself, just like the Black Fairy wants.
Henry and Fiona go face-to-face. She knows that Henry knows who she really is. She knocks him down the stairs to stop him from getting through to Emma. He’s rushed to the hospital. Henry’s not letting even injury stop him from fighting the Black Fairy. He pleads with Emma to believe him, but she wants to protect him. She takes the storybook from Henry and burns it just like the Black Fairy wants. Before the book burns, she catches a glimpse of Hook’s face. Suddenly, the Enchanted Forest starts crumble.
The young girl from the beginning of the episode goes back to her home and finds it destroyed. Tiger Lily shows up and wants to take the child to her mother. She swears the girl will be reunited with her father one day.
The Black Fairy presents Henry with a plate full of the storybook’s ashes. He can’t believe Emma actually burned the book. Emma leaves Storybrooke to go back to Boston. When she gets there, she finds a note Henry left for her, along with a makeshift storybook. He won’t stop trying to get her to believe. He knows they can still get their happy ending.
David and Hook are still on the beanstalk when the Enchanted Forest starts to fade. David drops Hook into the depths below. Snow and Jasmine find him in the forest. How did he survive that fall? He still has the magic bean, but David is missing. Snow tells Hook to get back the castle, she’ll find David. She does and it doesn’t look good. She kisses him, hoping that true love’s kiss will wake him up, and it never fails.
Emma’s lack of belief is zapping the magic out of everything, including the magic bean. Regina doesn’t think she has enough power, but with the help of the Evil Queen she does. Teamwork makes the dreams work!
In a last ditch effort, Henry goes to Rumple for help. While Rumple knows Fiona’s lying, all he cares about is Belle. He refuses to get too involved, but he does give the boy two things in return: the magic mirror and a sword from his shop. He sends his family a message saying that he’s going to take the Black Fairy on his own.
Love Always Wins
Regina holds off the darkness for as long as she can, but the Enchanted Forest is falling apart. Back in Storybrooke, Henry walks to the town hall ready to fight alone when Emma shows up! The Black Fairy comes looking for her fairy wand at the shop. Rumple calls her out for keeping him away from Belle. She promises that she can make Gideon and Belle love him without him having to give up being the Dark One. He refuses to trust her. He knows all magic comes with a price.
He holds the dagger to her neck, ready to make the Black Fairy fix this mess. But she reveals that she’s not the one who’s going to kill the savior. She’s commanded Gideon to kill Emma! The Black Fairy’s pretty much useless now, so Rumple kills his own mother. Emma remembers everything just in time to fight Gideon.
With Belle in tow, Rumple goes to fetch Gideon’s heart. The evil side of Rumple tries to convince him to betray his family in this moment, but Rumple isn’t going to let the darkness win this time. He tells Gideon’s heart to not kill Emma, but it doesn’t work.
Henry and Emma find everyone in the middle of town! Hook and Emma kiss! Emma thinks there’s no way good can truly win in the end, but Regina knows there’s a way. Regina’s not giving up on Emma. Not now, not ever. Gideon shows up and threatens Snow’s life. Gideon and Emma start to fight. No matter what she has to do, she’s going to make sure good prevails in the end. She drops her sword, and Gideon stabs her through the heart! They all think she’s dead, but Henry’s kiss wakes her up. True love’s kiss wins again!
Belle and Rumple find baby Gideon. They finally get their happy ending, but Belle thinks of it as their beginning. The storybook gets restored. Snow and the rest of the gang also realize that this isn’t the end. Now they get to see what’s next. The clock begins to move again, and all the realms are restored — Agrabah, Wonderland, all of them.
The Charmings settle in to a new farmhouse house with baby Neal. Hook and Emma are running the police department together. Regina is still mayor. Snow’s teaching again. Robin asks the Evil Queen to marry him! Belle and Rumple are happy and in love. Everything is as it should be. They all settle down to dinner at Granny’s diner as a family. This scene is a page out of the storybook the little girl from the beginning of the episode has in hand. She takes the storybook and knocks on someone’s door. The man is none other than Henry Mills, and the little girl is his daughter, Lucy! “Come on, your family needs you,” she tells in the episode’s final moments. What a way to end the season, Once Upon A Time!
