The woman behind the gorgeous tans of Victoria’s Secret models like Alessandra Ambrosio and Adriana Lima is sharing her top tips so you can get a perfect tan at home!
Makeup artist Meredith Baraf works with stars like Lea Michele and Adriana Lima, and now she is spilling her self-tanning tips so you can look gorgeous all summer. First things first — prep. Meredith tells HollywoodLife.com: “Start using self-tanners regularly at least two weeks before a vacation to saturate your skin with product. The more saturated your skin is the longer your faux glow will last.” Meredith is a fan of the Versa Spa’s Gradual Tanning Spa Butter. It slowly builds color slowly, and over time. It’s super moisturizing and easy to use!
Exfoliate –– Anyone can exfoliate easily and for little money. Instead of a fancy tool, a washcloth will do the trick. You can combine with a scrub like the Versa Spa’s Body Wash and Exfoliator. Don’t use something that’s too harsh, and don’t use something that is oil-based — neither will allow your tan to go on evenly.
Moisturize — Meredith has been tanning models and celebs for over 15 years and she says so many of them ruin their expensive tans because they skip this step! It’s essential. “The more moisturized your skin is the less your tan will flake and fade and it cuts down on the chances of having orange, streaky skin,” she says.
Sweat, Salt and Chlorine –– Any water will start to fade your tan. Don’t swim or shower for at least 4 hours after applying self-tanner. I personally like to apply at night and then sleep, so it sits for 8 hours. After showering, pay skin dry, don’t rub with a towel.
Products — Meredith says aerosol tanning products apply super evenly. Versa Spa’s Bronzing Mist has a color guide, so it’s foolproof. “Start from the bottom up and work the bottle in a circular motion (4-8 inches away from your skin) without stopping. Keep it moving! Release your finger from the bottle before you stop this circular movement. A great way to get the hard to reach areas on your back is to spray the bottle over your shoulder and take a step back into it like we’re taught to do with perfume. Do this a few times and you will have a nice even tan!”
