Former NYC Mayor and close Trump ally Rudy Giuliani is reportedly the president’s pick for the next FBI director. The current cyber security advisor’s potential promotion comes one day after Trump fired the sitting FBI Director James Comey in a sudden, shocking decision.
FBI Director Rudy Giuliani? The former presidential candidate was spotted at Trump International Hotel on May 10, located close to the White House, amidst rampant rumors that he’d be replacing FBI Director James Comey. Comey was unceremoniously fired by the president on May 9 through a letter that immediately made the rounds on the internet. Now, just hours later, Giuliani appears in DC for a White House meeting. He stated to reporters that he agreed with President Donald Trump‘s decision to terminate Comey from the FBI:
“I think the president made the right decision,” Giuliani told New York Magazine and Atlantic reporters at the hotel. “Jim (James Comey) is someone I regard as a friend. He worked for me for three years when I was U.S. Attorney, but I feel he made a number of bad judgments over the last year and the president was correct in removing him and trying to get the FBI better leadership.
“I think everything the president does creates political blowback, ’cause I think the president is treated quite unfairly. And I think the president made the right decision. I think any president, given the decisions that were made by the FBI director over the last year, would lead to the result that the FBI needs different leadership.”
The reporters asked him directly if he was replacing Comey, and he denied the appointment, stating he was simply going to the White House for “meetings”. “I am not. I’m not a candidate for FBI director. The president’s not gonna ask me, and I’m not gonna be FBI director.” Was he just deflecting? The same NY Mag reporter later received word from a source close to Giuliani that he’s allegedly “100% in consideration for the position.”
Trump fired Comey on May 9 at the recommendation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy AG Rod J. Rosenstein. They didn’t believe he was the best person to lead the FBI anymore after his fumble publicly discussing Hillary Clinton‘s emails shortly before the presidential election — more so that he apparently came to the wrong conclusion of closing that investigation. Hmm…
It’s troubling to many that his firing came just days after testifying in front of a Senate committee about the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia, as well as the Russian collusion in the presidential election. Comey said that he could not comment on that classified information. An odd line in Trump’s termination letter to Comey said:
“While I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that I am not under investigation, I nevertheless concur with the judgement of the Department of Justice that you are not able to effectively lead the Bureau.” It sounds disturbingly like Trump allegedly fired Comey for investigating him. It would make sense that he’d like a friend — maybe Giuliani? — who agrees with everything he says in the DOJ.
HollywoodLifers, are you shocked that Giuliani could be the next FBI Director?
